Facebook employees went to Africa and the Android version became faster
An engineer named Alex Sourov from Facebook recently shared a true story with us. A team of product managers and engineers went to Africa to inspect (unspecified which African countries), but the target of the inspection was not the scenic spots, but the company's Android version of Facebook client. If you want to know why, please click to continue reading. They pointed out that Facebook's target is not just those who use high-end mobile phones and high-speed networks, but to bring Facebook to everyone and connect "the remaining 5 billion people". So, they bought several different Android phones to do a big test of the Facebook client. As for where these phones were bought and what models they were, we don't know. We only know that they lack built-in storage space and should be some low-end phones commonly used by Africans. They found that when they opened the Android version of Facebook client in Africa, due to hardware performance limitations and poor network quality, data loaded very slowly and the client often stopped working. The test showed that they burned up all their data traffic for the month in 40 minutes using the Facebook client! This experience made them realize that after returning to base, they decided to improve the performance of the Android version of Facebook client. To this end, they made several improvements. For example, they found that Facebook took a long time to start on devices with single-core processors because too many things would be loaded at the moment of startup, so they delayed the loading order of some things, and some things would not be loaded until they were needed. In addition, they decided to convert the image format to Google's WebP. Compared with JPEG, the data used when downloading WebP is 25%-30% less, and 80% less than PNG. The second image strategy is to download the corresponding version of the image according to the screen resolution of the device, rather than blindly downloading the original image. The high-resolution version will be downloaded only when the image needs to be enlarged. Finally, compared with the version at the beginning of the year, Facebook has now reduced the size of their Android client by as much as 65%. They pointed out that this version of the update has actually been launched, and even if you are not in Africa, you should download it and try it.
