Re-experience the most popular mobile phone ten years ago
In 2004, Motorola Mobility brought us the Razr V3, a classic "blade" design, unimaginably thin and elegant body lines, a mobile phone that people talked about and never forgot. It was this phone that sold 130 million units in a year at a high price of $700, which is still a record that the iPhone needs to catch up with. Now, we are all more or less addicted to smartphones. What would it feel like if we really used the Razr V3 today in 2014? Gizmodo's Ashley Feinberg replaced her iPhone and re-experienced this most classic and popular mobile phone 10 years ago for a month. Feinberg bought the Razr V3 from eBay. Compared with the exaggerated price 10 years ago, the price today is very cheap, only $36. Time is really a butcher's knife... Before using the Razr V3, she was mentally prepared to adjust her usage habits, although she didn't know to what extent she would be "adjusted". After using it for 30 days, she called it a "hellish" experience and advised everyone not to try it easily. Mobile phones from ten years ago did not have GPS or map applications. This fact is quite scary for people with poor sense of location, and so is Feinberg. She laughed at herself, "I always imagine that if I didn't have GPS on my phone, I would have to live a new life on a bench in a nearby park." During the 30 days of using the Razr V3, there were several times when she had no idea where she was and had to take a taxi to where she was going. Mobile phones from ten years ago took terrible photos. Feinberg realized this shortly after using it. The camera of the Razr V3 is 1.3 million pixels, while today's mobile phone cameras have ten times the number of pixels. Despite this, she still likes the Fun Frame feature that comes with the Razr V3, which adds interesting effects to photos. Exporting photos from a mobile phone from ten years ago is not an easy task. Feinberg spent a lot of time on this, but because many people encountered the same problem, she finally found a solution in a long-standing forum. Perhaps she is the last person in the world to export photos from the Razr V3. It was difficult to send text messages on mobile phones ten years ago. When using a smartphone, Feinberg could often find out what someone was saying in a text message just by glancing at it. But the Razr V3 gave her a taste of the text message style ten years ago - only one message was displayed at a time, which made it difficult for her to adapt to the conversational text messages she was used to. "Do I remember what I saw ten minutes ago? No. Do I have to click a lot to review the text messages I sent before? Spare me... I'm not an animal." For foreigners, the T9 input method is very difficult to use. And after getting used to the convenience of the virtual keyboard of smartphones, they find it even more difficult to adapt to the old input methods. This is what happened to Feinberg. She eventually found a way to quickly reply to other people's text messages, which was to type "Haha", but she never got a reply from others. However, using a mobile phone ten years ago also made her realize that current smartphones have made people develop some bad habits. Although the text message experience is terrible, at least it works normally. But obviously, her friends around her don't think so, especially those who use iPhones. When Apple replaced the text message function with iMessage, a problem followed. When people changed their phones, they could not receive messages from others from iMessage. Feinberg often found that people had sent her a lot of messages after she turned on her computer, and even caused the computer to crash because of the excessive number of messages. This in turn reflects the benefits of the old text messaging system, Feinberg does not have to deal with a lot of messages every day that she can't handle in time. Razr V3 does not recognize Twitter, and it does not have a Twitter application. Feinberg had no choice but to borrow someone else's phone to log in to Twitter. However, the trouble came. She was used to using password managers such as 1Password and could not remember her login password at all. Only then did she realize that she could not do without password managers, but it also restricted her freedom to surf the Internet. In the end, she concluded that relying on password managers is a dangerous game. In the first two and a half weeks of using Razr V3, she found that she always unconsciously waved her phone once every five minutes, which was a habit left over from playing games on smartphones. Razr V3's power supply was satisfactory. In these 30 days, she only charged the phone 8 times. When using iPhone, she often brought two mobile power banks with her in case of emergency. The past 30 days of using the Razr V3 did not make Feinberg more nostalgic or dystopian, but made her more aware of the current status of smartphones. She said, "In the real world, it is extremely painful without a smartphone." More importantly, Feinberg is almost one step behind others in almost everything, and her friends around her are fed up with her. There was even one time when her mother almost published a missing person notice because she did not receive a text message. In short, Feinberg called these 30 days a "hellish" experience.
