Sony curved CMOS sensor photo samples leaked
Sony released a curved CMOS sample a month ago, which caused quite a stir in the camera industry. Although this technology is not new, it is the first time that it is so close to a commercial product. Recently, the Nikkei Shimbun interviewed the company's manager in charge of this project, Soichiro Itonaga, to talk about more details about the curved CMOS. In addition to the previously announced details, including the 2x increase in edge sensitivity and the effective solution to edge light loss and deformation, this time it was revealed that they have completed the trial production from 24MP full-frame to smartphone size - the former is consistent with the current resolution of RX1/RX1R, so it can be speculated that the possibility of RX2 using similar specifications has increased greatly. Another benefit of the curved design mentioned in this interview is that this feature will reduce the generation of "dark current" by 1/5, and allow the original f/2.4 aperture lens to maintain stable image quality performance even if it is upgraded to f/2.0. However, no matter what kind of technology is used, there will still be some technical bottlenecks. According to reports, in addition to the need to completely redesign the curved CMOS lens, the production of high-magnification zoom lenses will also become more difficult. Sony's solution to this is not surprising, which is to improve their "clear zoom" digital zoom function. At the same time, if the future interchangeable lens camera system is to adopt this technology, there may be a new adapter product. However, just observing the current difficulties, basically it will not be a big problem on the RX series full-frame successor. In fact, the fixed-focus and fixed-lens specifications of the RX series should be able to better play the advantages of the curved CMOS. We have already seen the strong R&D capabilities of Sony's photosensitive components on the RX1R, which has eliminated the low-pass filter.
