That's according to a study by software provider Opower, which actually sets the bar high. Opower's estimate assumes you charge your iPhone 6 from 0% to 100% once a day, but most people don't charge the battery to zero every day.

How to calculate it? First, it takes 1 hour and 48 minutes for a new iPhone 6 to charge from 0% to 100%, which consumes about 10.6 watt-hours per day. Multiply that by 365 days, and you get a total of 3.83 kWh. Multiply that by the average electricity price for U.S. residents (12.29 cents per kWh), and you get 47 cents a year. You can check your local electricity rates and use this method to calculate how much you spend on charging your iPhone 6 each year.

So how much does it cost to charge the iPhone 6 Plus, which has a larger screen, in a year (under the same conditions as above)? The answer is 52 cents. The iPhone 5 costs 41 cents a year.

For comparison, a laptop uses 14 times more electricity than a smartphone, and a desktop computer uses 49 times more, according to a study by the Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems in the US. And how does it compare to a video game console? An Xbox One uses 61 times more power than an iPhone 6.
