Google Glass will stop taking orders and move from Google X to a new division
Google said it will stop taking orders for Google Glass starting next week and will shut down its "Explorer" software development project.
Google said that while it would stop accepting new orders, it would continue to support businesses that use the product.
The current "Explorer Edition" of Google Glass is only available to software developers and costs $1,500. The project was launched in the United States in 2013, and it was expected that the product would soon be officially released in retail.
The Google Glass team will also move out of Google X and operate independently under the leadership of Ivy Ross, who will report to Tony Fadell, CEO of the smart home division Nest.
Fadell said the project opened up a new market and helped them better understand the needs of consumers and enterprise users. He is excited to work with the team to integrate their experience and knowledge into future products.
Industry insiders pointed out that at first glance, this seems to mean the end of Google Glass, but in fact Google has already cooperated with Italian glasses giant Luxottica, and yesterday there was news that British retail giant Tesco is developing a Google Glass shopping application. Moreover, transferring Google Glass from the experimental Google X department to the consumer products department may also mean that this product will have a greater prospect in the future, and it is very likely to become a commercial product with actual distribution channels.
However, there is no news about when Google Glass will be commercially released, and Google has not disclosed the release date of the new version of Google Glass. For now, Google Glass is still an experimental product, which is only tested in a limited group of people and cannot be purchased by ordinary consumers.
When Google Glass was released in 2013, the product was highly praised by the company's co-founder Sergey Brin, who personally hosted the grand launch event at the time.
Early users of Google Glass are excited about the product, which allows them to access information, take photos and navigate via the small screen in the upper right corner of the glasses. Robert Scoble, a technology blogger, even said he couldn't imagine life without Google Glass and even wore it to take photos in the shower.
But he and others quickly grew tired of Glass, complaining that the product wasn't working as well as they had hoped, and many were concerned about privacy and security.
In addition to Google, other companies have developed similar smart glasses and other forms of wearable devices, but none of them have yet demonstrated great potential and value.
BBC reporter Rory Cellan-Jones believes that although Google tried to show the outside world through this statement that Google Glass is still evolving, in fact, Google Glass is dead, at least in its current form.
"In the few months I wore Glass, I found it to be useful in some ways, especially the camera," said Ciarán-Jones. "But it also had some major flaws - it made us feel silly, so it was never going to appeal to mainstream users."
But Google now has to deal with disgruntled Explorer Edition owners who paid serious cash for it, and as such, it has to convince them that the product will eventually evolve into something more useful.
That way, at least the Glass team can move forward without the time pressure. Fadell will be in charge of its future development. He and Ross, who comes from the fashion industry, know that for wearable devices, form and function are both necessary elements for success.
