Samsung Exynos 7420 flagship SoC performance test

Samsung Exynos 7420 flagship SoC performance test

After Qualcomm revealed at the end of last year that Snapdragon 810 had lost a major customer, the birth of the Exynos 7420 version of Samsung GALAXY S6 quickly confirmed this; for several years, Samsung's flagship phones have been launched in a combination of Snapdragon + Exynos versions, with the former being the main one. Now that everyone is using a public version architecture processor, Samsung, which has a process advantage, is obviously very confident in its 7 series processors.

As Samsung's first processor running on 64-bit AArch64, Exynos 7420 adopts the big.LITTLE architecture of A57+A53, where the maximum frequency of A57 will reach 2.1GHz and that of A53 will reach 1.5GHz. The integrated GPU is Mali-T760 MP8 (main frequency 900MHz), and the maximum memory bandwidth can reach 25.6GB/s.

Exynos 7420 is also Samsung's mobile processor that uses FinFET 3D transistor technology and 14nm process. It has inherent advantages in processor power consumption and heat generation. The power consumption is reduced by 30~35% compared with the previous generation 20nm processor.

Exynos 7420 CPU Performance Test

Next, let’s take a look at the specific performance of the Exynos 7420, which makes Samsung so confident, and its performance comparison with the mainstream Android processor platform.

Basemark OS II 2.0 was used for the overall system evaluation. In terms of the overall score, Samsung Exynos 7420 performed very strongly, ranking first among all Android flagship phones, which is similar to the results given by some domestic evaluation software, and only behind Apple iPad Air 2 which uses A8X SoC.

In the System test, which focuses on CPU and RAM and includes CPU floating-point and integer calculation tests, the performance of Samsung Exynos 7420 is still top-notch among Android models. It is worth mentioning that it is far ahead of Exynos 5433. In addition to the CPU running at a higher frequency (Exynos 7420 has a large core of 2.1GHz and a small core of 1.5GHz, while Exynos 5433 has a large core of 1.9GHz and a small core of 1.3GHz), the 14nm process of Samsung Exynos 7420 will also help a lot.

In the storage performance test, Samsung's score is still the highest among Android phones, as it uses LPDDR4 RAM for memory and flash memory chips that meet the UFS 2.0 standard for flash memory. It is said that Samsung's new LPDDR4 RAM can bring up to 50% performance improvement compared to LPDDR3. If the 32-bit dual-channel chip design of the previous generation Exynos is continued, its bandwidth will reach 24.8GB/s. The bandwidth of the Snapdragon 801 with LPDDR3 memory is 12.8GB/s, and the bandwidth of the previous generation Exynos 5433 is 13.2GB/s. Such bandwidth can not only support higher resolution screens, but also is very helpful for games with large data throughput, 4K video recording, etc.

Exynos 7420 GPU performance test

Samsung Exynos 7420 GPU also has two more shader cores than Exynos 5433's Mali-T760MP6, becoming Mali-T760MP8; GPU operating frequency is also at a relatively high 700~772MHz. Next, use GFXBench 3.0 to test the GPU performance of Samsung Exynos 7420.

The results show that the scores and rankings of Samsung Exynos 7420 are very consistent, whether it is the high-end Manhattan scene or the low-end T-Rex HD scene. That is, in the Onscreen test, limited by the high resolution of 2560x1440 of the test device Samsung GALAXY S6 Edge screen, the performance of Mali-T760 MP8 of Exynos 7420 is inferior to that of devices with lower resolution but stronger GPU performance, such as Adreno 430 of Snapdragon 810 in the flagship HTC One M9 of the same period.

After the unified 1080p resolution, the theoretical performance of Exynos 7420 is only behind NVIDIA SHIELD and Google Nexus 9, two models equipped with NVIDIA nuclear warheads. The scores are also 10 and 20 percentage points higher than the Adreno 430 of Snapdragon 810 in the Manhattan and T-Rex HD scenes respectively. However, the operating frequency of Adreno 430 is not as high as 700MHz.
