Dr. Mo reviews iPhone 6S: The best smartphone ever

Apple has just released its new smartphone, iPhone 6S. In response, Walt Mossberg also wrote that this phone will enhance Apple's competitiveness in the smartphone market and put Apple in an advantageous position in the competition in the smartphone market. The content of Dr. Mossberg's article is as follows.

One of Apple's tasks every year is to launch a new iPhone to the market with enough improved features to attract users to upgrade to the new iPhone, or buy a new iPhone, or even make some mobile phone users abandon the phones from Apple's competitors and switch to Apple's iPhone. This year is no exception. Apple has launched the latest iPhone 6S smartphone and added many core new features to this new phone, including a display that can detect the pressure of the user's touch and the function of using this technology to make navigation operations more convenient and faster.

The new iPhone 6S, which went on sale last Friday along with the larger iPhone 6S Plus, doesn't offer many dramatic changes from last year's iPhone 6 series. In fact, the new iPhone 6S looks very similar to the previous version of the iPhone. However, the iPhone 6S does add some radical new features and core improvements. These new features and updates elevate the quality of the iPhone, making this beautiful, powerful device better than ever, and faster and easier to navigate and use.

In addition, these new features and improvements also ensure that the iPhone has achieved the status of "best smartphone" in the market.

The most important new feature of the new iPhone 6S is that the multi-touch display now has a whole new function - it responds to the pressure of your finger, which is called "3D Touch." For example, if you press a list of emails with a little more force than before, 3D Touch will let you see the email content, including pictures contained in the email, and then when you release your finger, you will be back to where you were. This may be one of Apple's characteristics. The company always tries to make things better and promote this practice widely, so that new product features seem more natural because Apple has control over the software and hardware platforms on which its products are based. Other large companies can't do this.

Another big improvement on the new iPhone 6S: Its improved camera is the best of the best, and it doesn’t drain too much battery.

After using the new iPhone 6S every day as my primary phone for the last few weeks, I think it’s the best smartphone on the market right now, especially considering the new operating system “iOS 9” that was released last week and comes standard with the new hardware.

Of course, I also found some shortcomings with the new iPhone 6S. As always, the new iPhone 6S is a high-quality product at $649 for the base model. In fact, the market is still flooded with cheap phones, and many of them are quite good, such as the $180 Moto G. If the user's budget is tight, the Moto G may be a better choice for you than the iPhone, although these cheap phones cannot compare with the new iPhone 6S in terms of quality and performance.

But if you can afford the iPhone 6S, it's definitely the phone of choice. In my opinion, the iPhone 6S's deeper integration of hardware and software, coupled with a cleaner, smoother operating system, makes it the best choice for the average, non-technical consumer, who is Apple's primary customer base. (Note: I haven't tested the larger, more expensive iPhone 6S Plus yet. I decided to stick with the mainstream models.)

Specifications, Design and Speed:

The new iPhone 6S is about 11 percent thicker than last year's iPhone, a difference I think is significant, but hard to spot in your hand, in your pocket, or even in the thinner case for the iPhone 6. Although the new iPhone 6S also has tougher glass and higher-quality aluminum, the added thickness is mainly to accommodate a redesigned display line to better accommodate 3D Touch.

However, the significant advantage that can be immediately seen by the market is the faster speed of iPhone 6S, which is mainly due to the targeted design of the new processor by Apple. Of course, this does not mean that the speed of iPhone 6 is slow, but that the speed of the new iPhone 6S has almost doubled. Whether it is flipping the screen, sliding the screen, or launching an application, the new iPhone 6S performs very well.

What surprised me most was the increased speed of the iPhone's TouchID fingerprint sensor, which is integrated into the similarly round home button. It's now so fast that if you shake the phone and use the button to authenticate with your fingerprint, it's processed instantly. I often don't even see the lock screen.

However, there are two things about the iPhone 6 that I think could be improved, but Apple hasn't. The first is that the back of the phone could be a little smoother, because the phone has rounded edges, which makes the iPhone 6 the most expensive phone I've ever had to have a case, and of course, that's now happening with the iPhone 6S. The second and more important thing is that the base model iPhone 6S, priced at $649, still only has 16GB of storage, while other premium phone manufacturers, including Apple's rival Samsung, now easily have as little as 32GB of storage in similarly priced phones. This can be a very important problem, because users will quickly use up this storage if they store a lot of photos. And the photos taken by Apple's new camera will be larger.

Another important thing is related to design. The new iPhone 6S has a new fourth color, which is borrowed from Apple's smartwatch Apple Watch, which has added a new rose gold color.

Battery life:

After two weeks of heavy use (because I was testing, testing, and testing), the new iPhone 6S never ran out of juice when I was ready to go to bed each day, and even after a 15-hour day of use, the battery still had about 10% left.

As part of iOS 9, Apple has also extended the battery life of the new iPhone 6S by building a "low power mode" into its phones, just like Android phone makers have done. In this mode, some background apps run slower, but users can still make calls, send and receive emails and text messages, and browse the web.

3D Touch:

In fact, some features such as 3D Touch in the new iPhone 6S smartphone have already appeared in Apple Watch and some Mac computers, but in this new iPhone 6S phone, the function of 3D Touch has been further enhanced.

There are two basic use cases for 3D Touch right now. In one, if you're on the home screen, you can press a little harder on an icon and a menu of related items will pop up, just like clicking an icon on a PC or Mac. For example, if you press on the email icon, a menu of related items will appear, allowing you to quickly check your unread emails, compose a new one, or do more. If you do these things on a new iPhone 6S smartphone, you'll see a normal list of contacts, allowing you to quickly make a call. You know you've successfully pressed the button because you feel the tactile feedback, and the rest of the screen will appear blurry and unreadable, drawing your attention to the pop-up menu.

The second use case is within apps. As mentioned above, 3D Touch gives you a better preview of all the emails in your email list without opening them. You can just lift your finger to go back to the list. If you scroll slightly, you can reply or perform other normal actions based on the preview, which is called "glance". With the "glance" preview, you can actually open the entire email as usual, just by pressing the button harder, which takes you to the next level of 3D Touch, the so-called "pop-up" level.

Another example is: In the Apple Maps app, if the user presses this icon, the user will get a menu indicating the direction of home, etc. In the Maps app, the user can get information about nearby businesses after pressing the button, and a direction menu will appear to help the user call these businesses or open their web pages.

After using it for a few days, I found 3D Touch to be very natural and very useful. But one thing to keep in mind is that 3D Touch currently only works with Apple's own apps, although it can also be used for third-party apps. I certainly hope to see developers develop more apps for 3D Touch, especially games, which may be able to fully utilize the functions and effects of 3D Touch. Apple claims that apps like Instagram, Pinterest, Dropbox and Facebook will support this new 3D Touch feature.

In addition, I think Apple itself will also develop more features for 3D Touch. For example, some Apple apps that are very common for this feature, such as stocks and weather apps, do not use this feature at all. When using the app function on the 3D Touch screen, if the user presses the music icon, it will immediately return to the previously paused song. However, when the user is using Safari, the button does not seem to allow you to return to the web page you were previously using.

I also initially found that I often pressed too lightly on an icon, which, as in previous similar modes, would result in floating icons that could be removed. However, I fixed this by adjusting the 3D Touch accessibility options in the settings menu. I think 3D Touch is an important feature that will only get better once developers and Apple itself start expanding its capabilities.

Camera:

The iPhone 6S has a new 12-megapixel rear camera, a significant improvement over the 8-megapixel camera Apple has been using for years. But more pixels are likely to result in worse pictures unless the sensor is improved, which Apple has been working on. In my tests, the new camera produced good results, with more realistic images that far surpass those of the iPhone 6, especially in low-light, close-up shots.

However, these improvements are minor, as the previous iPhone's rear cameras were already very capable, but the new rear cameras will still help maintain the iPhone's position as the best smartphone in the world.

Shooting video is another story. The new camera can now optionally record in 4K instead of HD. In my testing, the result was certainly sharper. The added 4K functionality will require further testing, and there are certainly devices that can play these videos. But it's still a repeat of the way things were, and HD video in the iPhone helped replace the video cameras in older non-smartphones.

The biggest highlight is the front camera in the new iPhone 6S, which is mainly used for mobile or video selfies. The new front camera now has a 5-megapixel resolution, which is much higher than the 1.2-megapixel resolution of some competing phones. In addition, the front camera in the new iPhone 6S has a clearer flash function. In my tests, I found that selfies are better, especially in low light conditions.

View Live Photos:

Another important new feature of the new iPhone 6S smartphone is the "Live Photos" feature. The Live Photos feature actually means that users can use the new 3D touch feature of the iPhone 6S to press the screen to view "dynamic photos". These photos can be taken through the "Live" button, which can take dynamic photos.

With the Live Photos feature, whenever you take a photo, it will automatically record some short videos for the photo, and it will also be equipped with dynamic pictures and sounds, and it can also form an ordinary photo.

In some cases, this feature is very powerful, such as when taking photos of adorable babies, but I appreciated the front camera after trying to capture a photo of a tree swaying in the wind and another shot of a busy barista at a coffee shop (also in very low light).

Live photos may become the norm. But there are other ways to shoot short videos, and I'm not sure this feature will surpass all my expectations for 3D Touch. Also, there are some drawbacks: Live Photos take up about twice as much space as a standard 12-megapixel photo. The feature is on by default, and can be turned off. Which brings me to my previous suggestion that Apple should increase the storage space on the base iPhone 6S to 32GB.

price:

As mentioned above, the iPhone is still a premium product. The iPhone 6S ranges from $649 to $849, depending on the storage capacity of the model. The iPhone 6S Plus with a larger display and different storage capacities costs about $100 more.
in conclusion:

Overall, the iPhone 6S is still the best smartphone on the market. If you already own last year's iPhone, you may not find some of the features attractive enough and don't need to upgrade. However, if you currently own an older iPhone or an Android phone, buying a new iPhone will definitely increase your satisfaction and happiness.
