There are few new 8K TVs at CES 2023, sales are declining, and is ultra-high definition a false demand?

As the most famous industry event in the global consumer electronics field, CES has always been an important stage for manufacturers to show off their skills. However, at the CES 2023 exhibition, 8K TVs were unusually coldly received by manufacturers.

According to media data, there were very few 8K TVs unveiled at CES 2023. Manufacturers such as Samsung and LG made some small moves, while Sony did not release a single new 8K TV.

Behind the collective dislike of 8K TV manufacturers is the poor sales data. According to data released by Omdia in April 2022, the global shipment volume of 8K TVs in 2021 accounted for only a pitiful 0.15%, which is almost negligible.

Among the 8K TVs sold worldwide, Samsung alone accounts for 65%. However, Samsung's 8K TV sales in 2021 actually fell by 18% compared to 2020.

It is not difficult to see that even though from the perspective of development trends, 8K ultra-high definition replacing 4K is an inevitable trend in the industry, consumers are obviously not willing to pay for 8K TVs at the moment.

Industry insiders believe that the lack of 8K TVs in the market is due to the lack of native 8K content and the high price of 8K panels, so users' perception of resolution is not as high as the panel size and TV picture quality. Therefore, compared with buying 8K resolution TVs without corresponding content to watch, consumers are more willing to invest the extra money in increasing the size of the TV and improving the TV picture performance.
