While home appliances bring convenience to our lives, they also cause a lot of troubles, such as high electricity bills every month. There are many people like me who dare not over-use air conditioners in the summer for fear of overspending on electricity bills. In fact, in addition to the normal power consumption of home appliances when they must be used, the energy waste caused by bad usage habits should not be underestimated. Recently, a news report about a TV set-top box "stealing" 10 kWh of electricity in standby for a month really shocked people. Who would have thought that the inconspicuous set-top box in the TV cabinet is actually a big electricity consumer. Today we will talk to you about the energy consumption of home appliances in standby mode, and by the way, help you calculate how much money is wasted in a year when the home appliances are in standby mode. Before we start, we must first understand a question: Why do home appliances consume electricity when they are not used? As long as the appliance is connected to the power supply, the circuit board, display screen and necessary program settings are in standby mode, there will inevitably be power loss. There are more than 20 kinds of household appliances in an average household. Although the standby power is very low, if they are kept in standby mode for 365 days a year, the standby energy consumption of all the appliances combined is also a considerable expense . If divided according to usage habits, household appliances can be divided into the following three categories: Category 1: 24-hour open types such as refrigerators, water dispensers, routers, etc. Category 2: Ready-to-use types such as TVs, air conditioners, range hoods, microwave ovens, air purifiers, set-top boxes, etc. Category 3: Plug-and-play types such as hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, electric irons, etc. It is not difficult to see that in an average household, the most common appliances are the second category. Usually, the plug is always connected to the wiring board, ready to use at any time. Due to the usage habits of household appliances, the placement of appliances and circuit design, these ready-to-use appliances are like leeches attached to the entire household circuit, keeping the electric meter at a constant jogging speed day after day. Large appliances: The main source of standby power consumption Large appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners are usually large electricity users in the home. The compressors of refrigerators and air conditioners, and the motors of washing machines and range hoods consume a lot of electricity when running, but the standby power is basically kept at a reassuring level. The standby power of a 42-inch LCD TV is 0.49W; the instantaneous power of operation is 59.45W. The standby power of a large 1-horsepower fixed-frequency air conditioner is 1.83W; the instantaneous power of cooling operation is 930.99W. The instantaneous power of 350-liter double-door refrigerator is 68.82W. Other large appliances: Drum washing machine: standby power 0.69W. European-style range hood: standby power 1.54W; instantaneous power of operation is 125.22W. Since large appliances are usually placed and hung in fixed positions, it is not possible to frequently plug and unplug the power supply in the use habit, which has become the main source of standby power consumption. Small appliances: Routers don't consume electricity when they are turned on for a long time With the improvement of living standards, there are many small appliances in ordinary households. So how about the power consumption of small appliances in standby mode? Desk lamp standby power 0W; running instantaneous power 6.90W Floor fan standby power 1.57W; running instantaneous power 43.95W Air purifier standby power 0.48W; running instantaneous power 48.83W Water dispenser heating instantaneous power 351.46W Mobile phone charger standby power 0; instantaneous power 6.73W Router Router 1 power 3.91W, Router 2 power 1.99W Others: Laptop: standby power 0.72W; running instantaneous power 22.76W. The overall power of small appliances in standby mode is generally kept below 1W. It is worth mentioning that the instantaneous power of the two routers we tested was 3.91W and 1.99W respectively when they were running. The rumors on the Internet about routers "stealing" electricity are not true. In addition, the power of a mobile phone charger is 0 when not charging. Many people do not like to unplug the charger after charging, which has no impact on electricity costs. Does the set-top box "steal" 10 kWh of electricity a month? Finally, let's take a look at the standby power of a digital set-top box. As shown in the figure, the power of a digital set-top box is 0 when it is turned off, but when the set-top box is turned on, its instantaneous power reaches 17.25W. At this time, we can see that the set-top box displays the time, the TV is not turned on at this time, and the set-top box does not generate data transmission with the TV. When we turn on the TV, the power of the set-top box when data is transmitted between the set-top box and the TV is 17.61W. Set-top box standby power 0W Power consumption when powered on and no data transmission: 17.25W The power consumption when watching digital TV after turning on the machine is 17.61W Strictly speaking, the standby power is the power consumption of an appliance when it is connected to the power supply and not turned on. Therefore, the set-top box does not consume electricity in standby mode. However, according to the placement and usage habits of the set-top box, many people have not paid attention to this detail. As long as the set-top box is turned on, whether watching TV or not, the electric meter will run at a speed of 12 kWh per month. Adding the standby energy consumption of other appliances, more than 200 kWh of electricity will be lost in a year. Household appliances waste 267 kWh of electricity in a year in standby mode. From this point of view, the rumor that the set-top box "steals" 10 kWh of electricity in a month in standby mode is true, but the statement is not very rigorous. The set-top box does not consume electricity at all in standby mode. If you forget to turn off the switch on the back of the set-top box, it is still possible to "steal" more than ten kWh of electricity in a month. Air conditioners are used more and more frequently in summer, and friends who are distressed about electricity bills can't wait to turn on the air conditioner while staring at the electric meter. The electrical appliances that are necessary for life must be used. As long as we change some bad electricity usage habits, wouldn’t it be better to use the electricity saved to run the air conditioner for a few more hours?
