Recently, many netizens have questioned our graphics card power consumption test, believing that our measurement of power consumption under the 3DMark Fire Strike stress test is meaningless because it cannot truly reflect the power consumption in the game. Since there are doubts, in line with the principles of fairness and justice and respect for objective facts, we have specially written this article to respond to the doubts of the majority of netizens. After a large number of tests, it is shown that the 3DMark Fire Strike stress test is indeed the most capable of reflecting the upper limit of graphics card power consumption. It should be noted that the customized power consumption meter we use can not only obtain the PCI-E slot of the graphics card, but also measure the voltage and current of the external power supply interface, that is, it can test the power consumption of the graphics card alone, without having to calculate the difference between the power consumption of the entire machine and the power consumption of the graphics card platform at full load as in the past. This will introduce many error factors, resulting in a huge difference in the measured power consumption results. Test method The test selected six classic running points: 3DMark Fire Strike, 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme, 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra, 3DMark Time Spy, 3DMark Fire Strike stress test, and Heaven 4.0. The test time is based on the benchmark. The default 3DMark Fire Strike stress test is 20 cycles. Furmark, which was once the official test software, was added. In terms of game selection, all commonly used games were tested. All the downloaded game libraries were added to the test. The detailed game list will be given later. If the game has a benchmark, it will be used directly for testing; if it does not have a built-in benchmark, a fixed scene will be selected for manual operation, which lasts for 5 minutes. Test platform configuration The test platform is based on a 4.0GHz Core i7-6700K processor, DDR4-3200 4GB*2 memory and a SeaSonic Platinum 1200W power supply. For graphics cards, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Funders Edition and XFX Radeon RX 470 Black Wolf Evolution Edition were selected as test objects, and both have 6Pin external power supply interfaces. The GTX 1060 test results are as follows: It can be found that the maximum power consumption of the GeForce GTX 1060 in the 3DMark Fire Strike stress test is 124.9 watts, but the maximum power consumption of the entire platform is 224.9 watts in "The Division" and "No Man's Sky". It is preliminarily determined that the use of 3DMark Fire Strike stress test can make the graphics card power consumption reach a relatively high level, but the disadvantage is that it cannot obtain the maximum power consumption of the entire platform. AMD Radeon RX 470 test results The graphics card power consumption test results are also arranged in ascending order from small to large. Similarly, we also obtained the maximum power consumption of XFX Radeon RX 470 Black Wolf Evolution Edition of 171.2 watts in the 3DMark Fire Strike stress test, but we also failed to obtain the maximum power consumption of the entire machine, and the title of the highest power consumption was won by "Tomb Raider: Rise". Summary: 3DMark has become the first choice for measuring graphics card power consumption, but there are still many discoveries After testing 20 projects of AMD and NVIDIA representative graphics cards, we basically have a spectrum under what circumstances the graphics card power consumption/entire machine power consumption reaches the highest value. Although the exhaustive test items are limited, it is believed that adding more tests will not make much difference. Therefore, we can preliminarily draw the following conclusions, which will also have some guiding influence on future tests. 1. 3DMark is one of the best choices for testing graphics card power consumption; perhaps this one should be removed. 3DMark Fire Strike stress test can make the graphics card power consumption reach an extremely high value, which is also the maximum value among these 20 items, and is applicable to both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards. 2. The power consumption of the whole machine is the highest, but the graphics card power consumption is not necessarily the highest; everyone is accustomed to thinking that when the whole machine power consumption is the highest, the graphics card power consumption must be the highest, but this is not the case. This is mainly related to the game's optimization of CPU performance. For example, N cards get the highest whole machine power consumption in "No Man's Sky" and "The Division", while A cards get it in "Rise of the Tomb Raider". Considering the repeatability of the test, the power consumption test results of A cards and N cards, and the convenience of the test, it is recommended to use "Rise of the Tomb Raider" as the whole machine power consumption test project, and use this data as a reference indicator for purchasing power supply wattage. 3. Furmark has been over-optimized and is no longer suitable for testing; Furmark, as a baking machine artifact in the past, uses the GPU to run a super-large-scale fur algorithm to make the GPU core fully loaded, so as to test its graphics card stability and maximum power consumption. According to the test results, Furmark's power consumption is not actually high. The reason is that graphics card manufacturers have noticed that everyone uses Furmark for power consumption and stability testing, and they all "unintentionally" monitor Furmark's process. Once they find it, they will "optimize" the power consumption, and Furmark will no longer get the highest power consumption you want. 4. Excluding the influence of graphics card power consumption, the power consumption of the A card platform is still higher than that of the N card platform; under the same platform and different graphics cards, taking the 3DMark Fire Strike stress test as an example, the power consumption of the GTX 1060 platform is 208W, and the power consumption of the RX 470 platform is 275W, which is a 67W power consumption difference. However, the power consumption difference between the two graphics cards is only 46W (271W-125W), that is, the A card platform is 21W higher in addition to the graphics card. There was an argument before that the A card occupies less CPU, but now it seems that this is not entirely true. This issue needs to be discussed in depth next time. 5. Considering that most media and players do not have instruments specifically for testing graphics card power consumption, it is not easy to measure the power consumption of the graphics card alone. Therefore, it is recommended that the media/players use the 3DMark Fire Strike stress test. Although the power consumption obtained at this time is not the highest power consumption of the entire machine, the power consumption of the graphics card is the highest. The data obtained is more meaningful for reference for the graphics card.
