Speaking of "Berserk", comic fans who are a little older will definitely be familiar with it. This dark fantasy work created by "girl cartoonist" Kentaro Miura is full of violent and bloody battle scenes and moving human struggles. It has always been an irreplaceable masterpiece in the hearts of fans. Although this masterpiece just ended its new animation broadcast not long ago, at the same time, the animation and Koei Tecmo's "Berserk Warriors" also took advantage of the popularity of this work to release this "most fierce warrior in history".


The crossover of the warriors is also a commonplace topic. Starting from the "Gundam Warriors" in the PS2 period, Koei Tecmo has embarked on the road of no return that everything can be warriors. Of course, along the way, Koei Tecmo did not just use the original copyright for simple assembly line packaging. From the early simple warriorization to the later IP-based dishes, we can still feel the efforts Koei Tecmo has made in the transformation of the warriors. Although not all of them are masterpieces, there are also works that make people shine. For example, the international version of "North Star Warriors" left a deep impression on players with its punch-to-the-flesh sense of attack and explosive content.
However, this time, Berserk is only considered a moderately successful work. Why is that? Let's take a look at it.
A plot without a beginning or an end and crude music
The plot of the game develops from the Golden Age to the Millennium Falcon. The plot of the Golden Age is based on OVA clips, while the plot after that is based on CG. In the other column of the story mode chapter selection, you can see some small dialogues and plots, but compared to the original work, although the main plot can be roughly understood, most of the plot has been deleted.
In the dialogues except for the OVA clips and CG, the expressions of the characters are dull and the lip movements are not observed. After turning on the automatic dialogue mode, many dialogues take a long time to continue the next dialogue. Although the CG and OVA clips are well done, this kind of ordinary dialogue feels perfunctory. Some of the plots before the Golden Age can use the characters of the Eagle Group, but most of the plots after that are Guts alone. And there are still too few characters that can be used. If you don't include various forms, there are only 8 people in total. This is not the most critical. The most lamentable thing is that once the Golden Age is over, the performance level of the latter drops rapidly, full of various traces of rushing. Not only are the cutscenes passed by a lot of standing dialogues, but also many classic scenes are cut. In the later chapter of the Tower of Judgment, the scenes of several fat and thin gays under the bishop were cut out! The later battle against the Demon Emperor was just riding an old cow to fight the Demon Emperor who was transformed into a mist, and the part where the Demon Emperor transformed into a giant monster was hastily passed, and Guts and others went out to sea by boat was also very brief. Although the development was delayed by more than a month, it still gives people a feeling that the funds were burned out in the later stage and they had to tighten their belts. It is also because of the rush to finish that a large part of the content was cut, resulting in not much playable content in this game.
In addition, the music of Berserk Warriors was produced by Koei Tecmo itself, not by Hirasawa Susumu. Koei Tecmo's own music production level is definitely not bad, and it is one of the best in Japanese studios. However, perhaps due to the deadline or lack of funds, the music of this game is basically a mess, which cannot arouse the player's emotions at all, and even has some inexplicable awkwardness. Only the bone-crushing sound effect accompanying each knife in the frenzy mode is relatively pleasant.
Exquisite graphics and excellent sense of impact
Although the plot and music are indeed disappointing to players, Koei Tecmo has put a lot of effort into the graphics of this game. Although the modeling of the protagonist is not a perfect restoration (especially the face), it is also fine and praiseworthy - the protagonist Guts's several sets of models from youth to berserker period are meticulously crafted, faithfully reproducing the character image in the original comics; even this time, the types of enemy soldiers are not ambiguous, and some of the comics are basically in the game, and even the clothes of soldiers from different camps in the Golden Age are detailed. With such a conscientious level of painting details, it is hard to imagine that this is a Musou work. It is also worth mentioning that although this game has a PC version, in terms of the overall softness and fineness of the picture, the PS4 version of "Berserk Musou" is better.
As an adapted game, Berserk Warriors is not only faithful to the original story, but also considerate of the fans in the details. In story mode, the background of the pre-battle menu will change with the development of the plot. In the early stage, players can see Guts practicing sword alone, in the middle stage, they can see the "love triangle" of Guts, Casca and Griffith, and in the late stage, there is a warm picture of Guts' "funny group" taking a rest... Even the background of the main menu will change with the progress of the last game, which makes people feel caring.
It's not just the exquisite graphics, but the excellent sense of attack that impresses the most. Speaking of broadswords and greatswords, the game that can best restore this weapon is probably Hidetaka Miyazaki's "Dark Souls" series. The reason why the greatsword and super greatsword of Dark Souls are often compared with Berserk by players is because they have both a solid sense of attack and a heavy sense of power. As for Koei's "Berserk Warriors", it is just a musou game after all. It is definitely unrealistic to want to make the sense of attack of Dark Souls. However, the sense of attack of this game is worthy of the name of "Berserk".
When controlling Guts in battle, we can feel the lag of attack with every swing, from the slowness of raising the giant sword to the swiftness of swinging and slashing, and each frame of action reproduces the weight and power of the giant sword. At the same time, the posture feedback of the enemy after being hit is no longer the paper-like feeling of the "Musou" series. At the lightest, the enemy will lean back and fly into the air, and at the worst, the enemy will be arched and knocked away. Combined with the vibration of the handle and the blood spurting all over the screen, it gives players a sense of hitting the flesh with every blow.
In addition, the PS4 version of "Berserk Warriors" can run at 30FPS, while the PC version of "Berserk Warriors" cannot reach 30FPS without ultra-high configuration, so players who like this game should try to focus on the PS4 version. The PS4 platform is also the main development platform of "Berserk Warriors", and what is surprising is that in addition to PS4, PS4 Pro can also run "Berserk Warriors".
The performance of this game is actually quite satisfactory. Although it is a very pleasant surprise in terms of the feel as a musou game, it is still a musou game after all, and the game content is not very rich. It takes about a weekend to complete the story mode and 100 levels of Ga Zi's infinite eclipse, and completing the rest of the content is just repetitive physical work.
Criticism aside, although there are a lot of minor issues when playing, it is still a very enjoyable experience. If you want to buy a musou game this year, "Berserk Warriors" is a good choice.
