Volkswagen (Anhui) Components Co., Ltd.'s high-voltage battery system went into production, marking a key step for the group's electric vehicle production in Anhui

[November 21, 2023, Hefei/Beijing] Volkswagen Group's first wholly-owned battery system factory in China, Volkswagen (Anhui) Components Co., Ltd. ("the Company"), officially put into production the first high-voltage battery system. The battery system is a key component of the pure electric vehicles produced by Volkswagen Anhui based on the MEB platform. The production of this system is a new milestone in Volkswagen Group's strategy to build Hefei into a center for intelligent connected electric vehicles, and is also another important measure of the Group's "In China, for China" strategy.

Kang Nuoyi, Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group (China) and Head of Parts, Logistics and Quality Assurance Department, said: "'In China, for China', Volkswagen Group (China) Parts Department is actively promoting the Group's transformation into a new era of intelligent connected vehicles. The first high-voltage battery system rolled off the production line in Anhui, demonstrating the determination of Volkswagen Group (China) Parts Department to localize the development and production of first-class core components for electric vehicles."

At the commissioning ceremony, Ku Yang, technical general manager of Volkswagen (Anhui) Components Co., Ltd., and Han Haowen, business general manager, jointly introduced the development history of the project. They said: "The successful launch of the product fully proves that Volkswagen (Anhui) Components Co., Ltd. is a reliable supplier partner and has the ability to produce high-quality battery systems. Volkswagen (Anhui) Components Co., Ltd. is the first battery system factory wholly owned by Volkswagen Automatic Transmission (Tianjin) Co., Ltd., with an initial annual production capacity of 150,000 to 180,000 sets of high-voltage battery systems, which will be supplied to the MEB platform pure electric models produced by Volkswagen Anhui.

The new battery system is composed of multiple battery modules, battery management controllers, battery management systems and connectors. 96% of the parts required for battery production come from domestic local supply.

Thanks to the Group’s vision and dedicated investments in digital production processes, the production, assembly and testing of battery systems will use cutting-edge technologies and be highly automated at every stage.

For example, the company uses automatic loading technology throughout the entire production process. Combined with automatic guided vehicles (AGVs), high-precision smart cameras and industrial robots, Volkswagen (Anhui) Components Co., Ltd. is able to achieve just-in-time (JIS) logistics and precise parts processing to ensure production stability and product quality. In addition, the quality laboratory is also equipped with water jet cutting machines, laser radars and three-dimensional coordinate measuring machines (CMM) equipment. These devices effectively improve the efficiency of product analysis and enable it to meet the strict quality requirements of the Volkswagen Group.

While ensuring production efficiency, the company attaches great importance to the working environment and the health and safety of employees. The assembly line uses a specially designed ergonomic conveyor with a specific tilt angle, allowing each operator to work in a comfortable posture.

In the future, Volkswagen (Anhui) Components Co., Ltd. will also be the first in the group to put into production Cell-to-pack battery packs based on the standard battery cells developed in cooperation with Guoxuan High-tech.

Volkswagen (Anhui) Components Co., Ltd. covers an area of ​​more than 45,000 square meters and is adjacent to the production facilities of Volkswagen Anhui, the first joint venture of Volkswagen Group in China dedicated to the production of electric vehicles. The factory was built in less than 12 months, which is an excellent portrayal of the "Hefei speed".

The company currently uses a ground source heat pump system, covering 100% of the office area and auxiliary station area, and is expected to save about 900 megawatt-hours of energy each year.
