Nut R1 full review: from performance to fun, a flagship phone

Hammer Technology's history of having no flagship ended with Nut R1. Although Luo Yonghao did not promote R1 in a big way at the 515 launch conference, in the minds of Hammer fans, R1 is the focus of their attention. You know the reason even if I don't tell you.

Appearance: Hammer gene is off the charts

The Nut R1 inherits most of the industrial design concepts of the PRO 2, including the thin gold line on the frame, four round physical buttons, completely symmetrical bottom speaker and microphone openings, and the integration of fingerprint recognition into the back logo. These designs that have been well received by Hammer fans have been fully inherited, and it can be said that the Hammer genes are off the charts.

Although the screen of R1 is only LCD, and it does not adopt OLED like Apple, but thanks to the resolution of 2242X1080 (18.7:9), PPI of 403 and contrast ratio of 1500:1, R1 has achieved the best possible color and display fineness, which can be regarded as the materials and care of a flagship phone.

Following the same design language does not mean dullness and lack of innovation. On the contrary, it is a kind of genetic inheritance, which means the inheritance of usage habits and aesthetics, just like the appearance design of Mercedes-Benz and BMW is often gradually iterated, and the design differences between adjacent generations are not big. Even if the car logo is covered, you can tell at a glance whether it is a Mercedes-Benz or a BMW. In this sense, R1 inherits most of the design concepts of Pro 2 and is not lazy. In fact, in the design of the widow's peak on the top, R1 has achieved the largest scale of innovation under existing technical conditions.

Compared with the popular bangs design in full-screen mobile phones, the widow's peak design is more difficult. The widow's peak of R1 is concentrated in the camera part, and its size can only accommodate one front camera. The earpiece part is stored in the narrow slit at the top. Its existence is completely unnoticeable in daily visual experience. For people with obsessive-compulsive disorder, this design is undoubtedly more considerate.

Compared with Nut Pro 2, the biggest change in the appearance of R1 lies in the design of the back cover glass, which has evolved from 2.5D to 4-curved 3D glass. The chamfered parts are more rounded and smooth, and the hand feel is quite smooth.

Hammer Technology is a brand that is extremely good at paying attention to small details. For example, in the LOGO processing on the back cover of R1, theoretically, fingerprint recognition does not require a large size, but R1 has inlaid it with a gold edge and the overall size is increased accordingly, which enhances the product's recognition and convenience when touching the fingerprint.

Performance: One of the strongest on earth

Hong Kong media said Donnie Yen is the strongest on earth and can beat Tyson. That is nonsense. A height of 175cm cannot make him the strongest on earth. However, Nut R1 can confidently say that it is the strongest on earth at present. If we are more modest, we can add the word "one of the strongest".

Judging from the configuration of Nut R1, this statement is not false. When Snapdragon 845 is attached to R1, coupled with a minimum of 6G memory, its performance has surpassed most of its competitors. In actual experience, it is no exaggeration to describe the smoothness of R1's operation as smooth as silk. In fact, based on these configurations, plus the underlying support of R1 Android 8.1 system, it is difficult to be not smooth.

Hammer Technology has always been dismissive of running scores. This concept is very correct. When cheating is everywhere, running scores have been alienated into an entertainment activity. In order to disgust this activity, all Hammer Technology mobile phones will have a running score option when running scores. The implication is that if you want to run, just run. With special optimization for running scores, the scores will definitely not be bad, but how much help does this running score have for the actual experience? At most, it serves as a psychological comfort.

As an entertainment project, with the mentality of having fun, and also to satisfy the curiosity of friends who are obsessed with running scores, the R1 was subjected to three tests based on PCMark for Android, 3DMark for Android and GeekBench 4.2.

Those who are familiar with the industry will know that the reason why I chose the above three benchmarking software instead of the benchmarking software like Antutu and Master Lu is that these three software are more or less authoritative, and are more reliable than some domestic benchmarking software, and can be used as a reference. However, I would like to reiterate that benchmarking is entertainment, and it is not worth worrying about it.

It is worth mentioning that because the R1 has just been released, the test software is not fully able to recognize it, but this does not affect its running results. In addition, the running results will not be commented on, but only released truthfully, and there is no comparison with related models.

PCMark:

In the work efficiency 2.0 test, the five dimensions of web browsing, document writing, picture and video editing, and data operation were tested. In this test, the R1 scored 8303 points.

The computer vision test is mainly aimed at the high-level image understanding ability of the mobile phone. It tests the performance of the device in various image recognition tasks through three groups of projects: TensorFlow, Zxing and Tesseract. In fact, this also involves part of the AI ​​capabilities of the mobile phone. Mobile phones with slightly poor performance cannot install these three groups of tests.

In the visual test, the R1 scored 5016.

In the storage test, thanks to the R1's LPDDR4X dual-channel and UFS 2.1 memory configuration, it achieved a high score of 8251. The read part was 744.85MB/s and the write part was 173.8MB/s.

3DMark:

Compared with Snapdragon 835, the GPU of Snapdragon 845 has been upgraded from Adreno 540 to Adreno 630. The official overall performance improvement is 30%, and the video processing efficiency is improved by 2.5 times. This is also proved in the 3DMark benchmark test. The score of 4673 can basically beat a number of entry-level desktop graphics cards in seconds. It is a piece of cake to deal with all current mobile games.

GeekBencn 4:

In the test, the single-core performance of R1 was 2402 points, and the multi-core performance climbed to 8388 points. In the computing running score, it achieved a high score of 13434, close to the iPhone 8 Plus.

Fun: Photography performance breakthrough

Before the R1, although Hammer Technology spared no expense in developing the camera module, the results were always a little disappointing, which required the skills of algorithms and tuning. The same module, but different mobile phones often produce different photos, and this is the reason.

The rear camera combination of R1 is 12 million plus 20 million. The 12 million main camera CMOS uses Sony IMX 363, and the 20 million secondary camera module is Sony IMX350. The size of the main camera CMOS is 1/2.55 inches, supporting full-pixel dual-core focus. Coupled with R1's own 4-axis optical image stabilization and ArcSoft's algorithm tuning, the shooting effect has entered the ranks of top mobile phones.

The picture has clear layers, complete color reproduction, and the background blur is just right.

In portrait photography, based on a powerful algorithm, the R1 can accurately capture subtle changes in a person's skin color, and the focus speed is available on demand, making it a powerful tool for capturing life.

It is worth mentioning that the above photos are all original pictures without any post-processing.

As the first flagship phone of Smartisan after nearly two years, the performance of R1 has broken through the inherent impression that except for the excellent software, the other performances are mediocre. In terms of performance and fun, R1 is worthy of the flagship. In fact, especially in terms of performance, R1 is a very competitive model among the flagship phones currently on the market, and in terms of pricing, the starting price of 3,499 yuan is relatively affordable. After all, in addition to this, you can also get R1's wireless charging, Qualcomm QC4+ fast charging, pressure-sensitive screen, and linear motor, which are all top configurations of mobile phones currently on the market.
