Longer term trends of the top 10 programming languages ranking (1989-2014)

IOBE has just released the November programming language rankings. The top 10 rankings this month are relatively stable. C, Java, and Objective-C are still in the top three, but the R language used for statistical analysis, drawing, and operating environment has risen rapidly and ranked 12th this month. The rise in the R language ranking is due to the current attention received by big data and computational statistics. There are many statistical programming languages in the TIOBE rankings, such as Julia (#126), LabView (#63), Mathematica (#80), MATLAB (#24), S (#84), SAS (#21), SPSS (#104), and Stata (#110). Most of these languages will rise a certain position every month, but the R programming language has the largest increase.

The TIOBE Programming Community Index is published monthly, listing the popularity of programming languages each month. The TIOBE programming language rankings are based on the number of experienced programmers, courses, and third-party vendors on the Internet, and are compiled using search engines (such as Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Baidu) as well as Wikipedia, Amazon, and YouTube. The TIOBE rankings only reflect the popularity of a certain programming language, and cannot indicate which programming language is the best or the amount of code written in different languages.

The TIOBE Programming Language Index can help you clearly know whether your programming method is still on the rise or in decline, and can also help you decide which programming language to use in your next project. (Click here to view the TIOBE index definition)
