Beijing time, December 29th morning news, starting from Sunday local time in the United States, iTunes users in the United States and Canada can rent or purchase Sony's controversial film "The Interview". Apple's move means that Sony has perfected the online distribution channels for "The Interview." Last Wednesday, the film began to be released through the Google Play online store, YouTube, Microsoft Xbox, and Sony's own website. Currently, the price of the film in iTunes is the same as other channels. The rental price is $6, while the purchase price is $15. Apple responded briefly: "We are pleased to offer The Interview for rent and sale on iTunes." However, Apple did not explain why the company did not offer the film along with other online stores starting last Wednesday. Industry insiders believe that the most reasonable explanation is that Apple may not want to fully comply with Sony's desired speed. On December 17, Sony announced that the film would not be released in traditional theater chains. A week later, Sony came up with a plan to promote the film through online channels and hundreds of independent theaters. Sony said the film grossed more than $1 million on Christmas Day, its first day of theatrical release, and that it had taken in $15 million in online sales and 2 million downloads and rentals since last Wednesday. Sources close to Sony said YouTube and Google Play accounted for the bulk of that revenue. |
