If the IT industry is the hardest hit by overtime, then Internet companies are even more so. For domestic Internet companies, overtime is almost common, but they may not enjoy the legal benefits they deserve. Well, you will say that everyone knows that Internet companies have a lot of overtime, but why is there so much overtime? As a product dog who has been working in Internet companies of all sizes and is still struggling, I decided to take time out of my busy schedule to write an article to analyze in depth how overtime dogs are made?

The historical reasons, development process and consequences of overtime work for each company or each overtime worker are diverse. Here we will divide overtime workers into two groups based on objective factors and subjective consciousness: one is voluntary overtime workers and the other is forced overtime workers.

Among those who actively work overtime, the following groups are particularly common:

Young poor freshman

The characteristics of this group are young age, low income, and low position, belonging to the "three lows" group. Most of them are fresh graduates who may be working alone in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. They are also typical "three-no" youth: no money, no house, and no sex life... After getting home from get off work, they stay alone in the rented house. In the long night, they either play LOL or masturbate. Some of them don't even have a computer, which is even more inhumane. Relatively speaking, the company's environment is much more upscale, the place is clean and spacious, air-conditioned, and water and electricity are free. They surf the Internet, watch videos, play games, etc., and they can be said to have a good life.

Middle-aged boring man

This group of people are probably small supervisors or team leaders in a department, around 30 years old, usually married, and have a lot of family pressure. When they get home, they have a lot of housework to deal with, their relationship with their wives has faded, they have less sex, and their children are still young. They are more tired when they get home than when they go to work, their wives nag, their children cry... If they want to watch a movie or play a game at home, that is a heinous crime that destroys the happiness and harmony of the family. Instead of going home to do housework and coaxing their wives to take care of their children, it is easier to work overtime at the company to serve the boss.

Sweatshop workers selling their labor

The purpose of this race is "every penny earned is a penny earned"! Nothing else, just for overtime pay or meal allowance (working overtime for meal allowance, it's tearful to think about it). Although many Internet companies now offer overtime pay and other things, there are still benefits such as overtime meal allowance that are close to the bottom line of human morality. Driven by the interests of making more money, they overdraw their lives in exchange for money, and every penny earned is a penny earned. In addition to a large proportion of people in the Internet, there are also many people with this mentality in other industries, such as the workers of Foxconn, one of the world's top 100 companies...

There are also some companies that do not encourage employees to work overtime in name, but the boss's unspoken rule is to evaluate KPI based on the amount of overtime, and KPI determines how much money you get, so... the more overtime you work, the more money you get, so many ambitious young people have embarked on this road of no return of working overtime. Of course, the wool comes from the sheep, and the surplus value you create is far more than what you get.

Adapt to local customs

The company of this kind of people usually has a boss who loves to work overtime, and a group of colleagues who have long been trained to have good overtime habits. Therefore, even if there is nothing to do, everyone will stay in the company after get off work. They feel that leaving get off work normally is unsociable, irresponsible, and unethical. Therefore, in order to integrate into the company, to get used to the corporate culture, or to perform in front of the boss, this part of people choose to work overtime voluntarily or pretend to work overtime to gain performance.

The group of people who are forced to work overtime is quite large. Not only do they earn a disproportionate amount of money by working overtime, but overtime also makes them physically and mentally exhausted. They dare not speak out. Those who force these people to work overtime are naturally the company's leaders, including the boss, company executives, and managers. As for why they want employees to work overtime, the reasons are also varied.

Fanatical followers of the theory of surplus value

These leaders are well versed in the value discovery of Western capitalism and are committed to improving productivity, taking advantage of employees, and squeezing out every drop of surplus value. They try every possible means to increase employees' workload and working hours, and even implement a last-in-line elimination system, which causes physical and mental damage to employees. Everyone is afraid that they don't have enough work on their shoulders, and that they will be the last one and be ruthlessly eliminated. In the end, every employee obtains the value of survival by competing for overtime and workload.

Amateur pretender

This type of leader may be a relative, or he may be asked to manage business B because business A is doing well, for example, he may be asked to manage products while working in marketing. Basically, he knows nothing, and it’s fine if he doesn’t know anything, but he also likes to talk nonsense, fearing that others don’t know that he is a leader. At the same time, he is worried that his subordinates will be lazy, but he doesn’t know how to evaluate employees’ laziness or how to evaluate work progress, so… the most crude and direct way is to let employees work non-stop and work overtime. Only in this way can employees be kept busy and maintain a saturated workload, and he will feel comfortable. As soon as you get off work normally, he will start to talk to you, asking you why your work is not saturated, why others work overtime and you don’t work overtime… In short, if you don’t work overtime, he can’t eat.

Nocturnal

This kind of boss is a night walker. He is like a chicken blood shot at night. He usually comes to work slowly in the afternoon. In the afternoon, he finishes the backlog of work in the morning. When it's time to get off work, he starts to get excited as if he had taken expired aphrodisiac. He checks work, holds meetings, reviews plans, and a lot of other things, urgent or not. In short, he wants to make everyone run around and not let them leave until midnight. The people under him can only drag their tired bodies to accompany him to "fight to the end". It lasts until the second half of the night. He pats his butt and drives away in his Audi. Before leaving, he adds: Don't be late for work tomorrow~~

Reckless scalper type

This type of leader has a dull mind and average ability, most of whom have worked in the company for ten or eight years and barely become a middle-level manager. They also want to move up, but suffer from their own incompetence and failure to outstandingly perform to please the big boss. They can only use the stupidest method, which is to make up for their shortcomings with hard work. They think they can't do one thing well, so they think that among ten or eight things they can do, there must be one thing that can please the boss. Little do they know that this is the so-called "strategic laziness leads to more and more tactical mistakes", which is particularly obvious in Internet companies. They lead a large group of people to mess around, work overtime to brainstorm, and write plans. Their mantra is usually "Everyone must come up with at least 10 feasible plans for me. If you can't think of one, you don't have to go home today" or "Closed-door overtime, update the version", etc.... Then the people below follow this stupid leader to mess around, but in the end they get nothing... After working overtime so hard, it is very likely that the boss will not approve and have to redo the work... The overtime is in vain, and they can't even get any credit for their hard work.

MLM scam

This type of person is usually the boss of a small company. Without saying anything, he wants everyone to follow him to make tens of millions a year, go to the United States to go public and ring the bell, and then change the world. This type of boss is good at motivating employees and good at painting cakes, just like the leaders of pyramid schemes. Let's work overtime for free and fight together for a common ideal. In the Internet, there are many entrepreneurial companies that have just raised a little money and painted it bigger than the Milky Way. They said they would give employees equity options and said that it was a rapid growth period for the company. Whoever does not work overtime is not on the same front as the company... Usually, nine out of ten entrepreneurial companies that rely on financing or angel investment will go bankrupt. When the time comes, the boss will pat his butt and apply for liquidation. The employees will not get overtime pay, not to mention wages. What about the boss? He still drives a benz, lives in a villa, changes the name and registers a new company, and starts to fool a group of new employees to change the world with him.
