According to a new report from DeviceAtlas, English-speaking countries and Japan prefer iOS, while non-English-speaking countries prefer Android.

Recently, DeviceAtlas, the world's leading mobile device database and authoritative global mobile development tool, released a report on the network distribution of mobile devices in the first quarter of 2018. The report shows that iOS devices are in the leading position in terms of market share in countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, and also maintain a slight lead of 2% in Sweden.

The market share of operating systems in various countries announced by DeviceAtlas is as follows:

However, in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Malaysia, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, South Africa and Spain, Android devices have a market share ahead of iOS. DeviceAtlas reports that Android is more popular in non-English speaking countries mainly because of its product diversity and more reasonable pricing.

Of course, iOS still saw significant year-over-year growth in some of the countries where Android dominates, such as Colombia, Egypt, and Ireland:

The DeviceAtlas report also shows that a new operating system, KaiOS, has begun to gain momentum in India, with a market share of 15%, becoming the second largest operating system in India, causing the iOS system market share to drop to third (9.6%).

Although data from a large number of well-known research institutions show that smartphones are beginning to reach saturation this year, as stated in the DeviceAtlas report, the so-called saturation only occurs in several larger smartphone markets because "feature phones are still an active part of the mobile ecosystem in most countries" and there are still many devices that cannot fully support LTE connections, especially in Brazil, Nigeria and Egypt, which shows that the smartphone market still has a lot of room for growth.

Martin Clancy, head of marketing at DeviceAtlas, said: “The feature phone market is not going away and may even be making a comeback. The renewed growth of feature phone traffic in India highlights the fact that users of these devices have been neglected by web publishers and service providers.”

Obviously, iOS-based devices such as the iPhone X must perform poorly in these regions. As Cook said, the regions where iPhone X mainly drove business revenue in the first quarter of this year were Greater China and Japan, which grew by more than 20%.
