The whistleblower claims that Apple is still developing Touch ID under the iPhone screen

According to foreign media reports, according to a well-known Apple whistleblower, Apple is continuing to develop fingerprint technology that can be embedded under the screen, and may release an iPhone with an under-screen Touch ID (fingerprint recognition) sensor in the future.

The tweet was simple, with only one sentence: "MESA uts for iPhone." Mesa is Apple's internal code name for Touch ID, and uts is the abbreviation for "under the screen."

There have been rumors for several years that Apple is developing an under-screen Touch ID, including Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's prediction in 2019 that Apple will release at least one iPhone with an under-screen fingerprint reader in 2021. This may mean that the iPhone 13 is expected to be equipped with both Touch ID and Face ID.

Although there are patents and patent applications that indicate that Apple is still developing display-embedded Touch ID, these rumors have not yet become a reality. For example, two patents in July detailed various methods to solve the problem of reading fingerprints through display optics. There are also supply chain reports that Apple's major suppliers may be preparing to ship under-screen fingerprint recognition technology.

Equipped with both Touch ID and Face ID on the iPhone, it will undoubtedly be a boon to Apple users, with dual biometric authentication to further enhance security. If the face is covered, Touch ID can be used to unlock it. On the other hand, Face ID is required when wearing gloves or other skin conditions do not allow it.

Currently, with the global COVID-19 pandemic, Apple is working hard to make changes to adapt to this environment. I believe that under this market trend, Apple has more reason to return to Touch ID.
