Google today announced many new features that will be introduced in Android, including password checking tools, scheduled SMS sending, improved screen reader TalkBack, improved Maps, Assistant and Android Auto, etc. These new features will be pushed in small updates this spring, which are somewhat similar to "maintenance updates", adding new features and functions outside of Android's larger update cycle. Password Checker Google announced today that it is expanding the Password Checkup feature to older devices. Now, phones and tablets running Android 9 and higher can access the feature, which is part of Google's autofill password manager and can check the strength of your passwords and whether your credentials have been leaked. Scheduled SMS sending Scheduled text messaging will be available with an update to Google's Messages app, where you'll be able to tap and hold the send button on a message and select the date and time you want it to be sent. The company envisions the feature being useful for users who want to schedule messages to friends and family members in other time zones, and it's available on devices running Android 7 or higher. TalkBack Google's TalkBack screen reader, which allows blind and low-vision users to interact with their phones more easily, is about to get a more substantial update. In the latest update, Google is adding what are said to be some of the most requested features. "More intuitive gestures, a unified menu, a new reading controls menu and more". Optimize Google Assistant Google is beefing up Assistant with new cards to browse when you interact with the voice assistant while your phone is locked. The goal is to make it easier to use Assistant to do things like set an alarm, send a text message, or play a song, even when your phone isn't in your hand. Optimizing Google Maps Google Maps has added a dark mode that users can enable in Settings > Theme, or they can choose to "Always use dark mode." Optimizing Android Auto Android Auto now offers custom wallpapers and voice-activated games, including the ability to play quiz shows like Jeopardy by saying "Hey Google." There are also shortcuts now on the startup screen for accessing your contacts or using Assistant to complete tasks, such as checking the weather or adjusting the thermostat. Cars with wider screens will get a split-screen view with Google Maps on one side and media controls on the other. |
