Android Studio Arctic Fox (2020.3.1) Beta released, enabling a new version naming scheme

Google released the first Beta version of Android Studio Arctic Fox (2020.3.1). If named according to the old version number scheme, this version is Android Studio 4.3 Beta.

The new version number naming scheme was announced as early as last year. Google explained that this was to align with the IntelliJ version. Here is a brief introduction to the new version number scheme. The new version number format is as follows:

<Year of IntelliJ Version>.<IntelliJ major version>.<Studio major version>

▲Comparison of the new and old version number schemes

As you can see, the new version number consists of three parts:

  • Year: The release year of the IntelliJ used, consistent with the upstream
  • IntelliJ major version number: The major version number of IntelliJ used, consistent with the upstream
  • AS major version number: starts from 1 and increases by 1 for each major version released

So from the version number of Android Studio 2020.3.1, we can immediately know that this version is based on IntelliJ 2020.3 and is the first major update in this series.

In addition, to make it easier to refer to each version, under the new version numbering scheme, each major version will get a codename, incrementing from A to Z according to the name of the animal (similar to Ubuntu's approach). Android Studio 2020.3.1 is codenamed Arctic Fox, and the next major version is codenamed Bumblebee.
