When is Arbor Day?

March 12th of every year is China's Arbor Day.

The significance of Arbor Day:

Arbor Day is a festival that promotes the protection of trees in accordance with legal provisions and organizes and mobilizes the masses to actively participate in tree planting activities. Origin of Arbor Day:

Current situation in Nebraska In ancient China, there was a tradition of planting willow trees during the Qingming Festival. The earliest roadside tree planting in history was initiated by a man named Wei Xiaokuan in Shaanxi more than 1,400 years ago. Wei Xiaokuan (508-580 AD) was a famous general during the Western Wei and Northern Zhou dynasties. He was from Duling, Jingzhao (now southeast of Xi'an). According to the 52nd biography of "Northern History" by Li Yanshou of the Tang Dynasty, in the second year of the Western Wei Emperor Fei (552 AD), Wei Xiaokuan was awarded the title of Governor of Yongzhou for his military merits. Since ancient times, an earthen platform has been set up on the roadside every one li on the official road as a mark to calculate the mileage of the road, which is now a milestone. After Wei Xiaokuan took office, he found that the earthen platform had many shortcomings. It was easily collapsed due to wind, sun, and especially rain, and required frequent repairs. This not only increased the country's expenditure, but also caused the people to suffer from labor. It was time-consuming, labor-intensive and inconvenient. After investigation, Wei Xiaokuan resolutely ordered that all earthen platforms on all official roads in Yongzhou be replaced with a locust tree. In this way, not only will it retain its marking and metering functions, it can also provide shelter for pedestrians from wind and rain, and does not require repairs. Wei Xiaokuan's approach is undoubtedly a major measure to benefit his hometown, reduce the burden on his people, and benefit the country and the people. Shaanxi, as the earliest place in history to plant trees on official roads, was once a model for road greening in the country. The locust tree first planted by Wei Xiaokuan has been loved by people for thousands of years, especially Shaanxi people, who have a special liking for this locust tree, love it very much, and plant it widely. Now this locust tree has become the symbol of Xi'an and has been designated as the city tree.

The modern Arbor Day was first initiated by the state of Nebraska in the United States. Before the 19th century, Nebraska was a barren plain with few trees and yellow sand everywhere, and the people suffered greatly. In 1872, Julius Sterling Moulton, a famous American agronomist, proposed to establish Arbor Day in Nebraska to mobilize people to plant trees in a planned manner. At that time, the state agricultural bureau passed a resolution to adopt this proposal, and the governor personally designated the third Wednesday of April every year as Arbor Day. In the following 16 years, another 600 million trees were planted, finally turning 100,000 hectares of wilderness in Nebraska into dense forest.
