Recently, in the process of communicating with developers, we received the following feedback: The App Store review rules seem to have changed again! It set the app title according to previous standards (or set the same title as the previous version), but after submission, it was rejected by Apple due to title issues. After several revisions, it still failed. In response to this phenomenon, we talked to several developers and conducted tests ourselves. The results show that Apple’s review of app titles has indeed become stricter recently. However, Apple's review rules have not changed significantly. The main reason for the above phenomenon should be that the auditors implemented it more thoroughly. In the process of communicating with developers, we found that most developers who encountered title review issues received similar emails, and the emails clearly stated that the reason for the rejection was "adding inappropriate keywords or descriptions to the app title." Through the analysis of numerous rejected titles, modified approved titles, and comparison of the terms in the App Store Review Guidelines released by Apple during WWDC in June, it was found that Apple's latest App Store review terms have not changed so far . The main reasons for the rejection of these apps can be explained by the following review terms:
In addition, it’s only two months away that Apple releases its latest App Store review terms. Based on Apple's usual style of doing things, the probability of modifying the App Store review rules again in such a short period of time is small . On the day when "Meituan" and "Toutiao" were removed from the App Store, the number of apps removed from the App Store reached a new high within 1 to 2 months before and after the removal, and the reasons for the removal of some apps were very similar. This shows that Apple is indeed dealing with the issue of app titles according to its own terms recently, and the enforcement is stricter and more thorough than before. (To protect the privacy of developers, the titles used as examples in this section are not the original titles of the rejected apps and have been slightly modified) 1. Stuffing keywords
Obviously, there is keyword stuffing in the title of this app. As we all know, the search weight of keywords in the app title is greater than anywhere else. It is understandable to add as many key keywords as possible in this part, but random piling may be rejected by Apple. Based on past experience, if your application is rejected for this reason, you might as well select the core keywords and then organize them into smooth and grammatical sentences. This will not only make it easier to pass the review, but also maximize the search weight of the title part. 2. Add obvious competitor brand words in the title
The main reason why this title was rejected was probably because the brand words of competitors such as "Where to go on weekends" and "Where to go" were added to the subtitle. In fact, it has been a long time since Apple stepped up its protection of brand words. Not only has it clearly stipulated in the review terms that brand words of popular apps cannot be added to app titles, it has also opened an online channel for reporting infringements. However, there is a way to use other people’s brand words to gain traffic. At present, it is still possible to appropriately add brand words to the keyword field. 3. The title contains words that have nothing to do with the app’s functions.
If the description in an App title has nothing to do with the content or function of the App, it may also be a reason for Apple to reject it. For example, "Goddess Fitness" itself does not include the function of "recipes", but it adds such words in the title, which is seriously inconsistent with the product and leads to rejection. 3. Some apps have not had updated versions or titles recently. Conclusion It is a fact that Apple reviewers have increased their review of app titles. Developers who want to gain popularity and speculate in the title should be more conservative. If their app is rejected, the launch delay may not be just a day or two. As for whether Apple has adjusted its review terms, the probability is relatively small based on the current situation. We will continue to pay attention to whether Apple will have any major moves in the future and push the first-hand news to you as soon as possible!
