First, let me introduce myself. I started to run Kuaishou short videos during college (2015-2018), and gained 200,000 followers within a month.
After graduation, I joined a medical beauty traffic operation company (2019), doing traffic operation work for short video on Douyin. Within one month, the matrix account gained 800,000 followers.
In 2020, I started my own business and created a Douyin short video matrix account. In the first month, I started to monetize 170,000. As of now, the matrix account has accumulated 6 million followers and has monetized over 5 million.
For brands, using Douyin is about brand publicity and promotion as well as corporate self-broadcasting; for small teams, they are more concerned about direct monetization.
The sharing in this article is more targeted at small groups or individuals . The operation methods may not be the same for large brands, but some ideas for making short videos can be used as a reference.

01. Seven-day spiral number method

Because I started creating this account in 2019 and have been continuously updating short video content.
In order to test whether the account cold start method has changed in 21 years, the following methodology was tested to 100% pass the cold start stage - the seven-day spiral account creation method.
Day 1: Insert the real-name SIM card into the phone and register a TikTok account.
One person can apply for 15 real-name mobile phone cards. Do not use IoT cards or real-name cards from non-mainland China. Register the Douyin account in 4g status and do not make any changes to the account appearance.
Watching videos from the same industry is, firstly, to find your own benchmark accounts and video content to bring content inspiration for future creations, and secondly, to attach relevant tags to bring more accurate traffic to subsequent video releases.
Labeling in a stricter sense: When your video becomes popular, your account can be labeled with the content of the video;
Check whether it is labeled: Use other accounts to follow this account and recommend people you are interested in. If it is an account in this field, it means to attach a label in this field.

Last month, Douyin launched content tags on its backend. By opening Douyin’s Creator Center, you can add tags to improve the accuracy of recommendations for users who may be interested in the content.

You don’t need to modify your appearance on the first day: nickname, introduction, avatar, personal information, banner. Just watch videos for 30 minutes in the morning and evening on the first day.
The next day: Continue to watch related videos, and follow 5-10 accounts, 2-3 top accounts, and 3-8 recently emerging accounts of excellent peers.
Day 3: Instead of watching videos through search, watch videos through the recommendation page, 30 minutes each in the morning and evening, and modify the appearance of the account.
You can release the video on the third night. The time is 6:30/8:30/9:30. Release the video according to the peak time period when your target users are online.
After three days of watching videos, you should have found similar videos, those with a high number of likes and that have been newly released, and imitated them to create videos in your own style.
Day 4: Release a video each in the morning, afternoon and evening, and observe the traffic of the four videos released. If the number of views is around 500-1000, it means the traffic is normal and you can continue to release videos.
If the traffic is lower than 500, it means that the content is temporarily not good, so adjust the content.
Day 5: Publish a video in the morning, afternoon and evening. At this time, you have published seven videos and can start to choose Dou+ delivery.
Select 5 videos with good playback volume, 100 yuan, system intelligent recommendation, 12 hours, likes and interactions.
Day 6: If your work is good enough, by the sixth day it should have become a hit with tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of views, and the number of fans has also increased to thousands.
After that, just continue to update 2 videos every day, there is no need to release or selectively release videos.
Day 7 : Continue to shoot and edit videos based on the content of benchmark accounts. While steadily increasing the number of followers, start looking for benchmark sales videos. You can post videos that increase followers and sales videos simultaneously every day.

02. Five ways of thinking when making short videos

1. Monetization thinking

When making short videos, you should do things that are closest to money and shorten the path to monetization as much as possible.
For example: directly select products from the selected alliance and put them on the display window, and earn commissions through short videos or live broadcasts;
Open Star Chart Ads, and advertisers will approach you to place brand ads.
If you have a source of goods or are good at not having a source of goods, you can open a Douyin store, on the one hand, sell goods yourself, and on the other hand, seek influencers to help you sell goods;

For example, if I am working on health-related content (I need to be careful about the degree, as this category is prohibited on Douyin),
I share some tips and tricks on health and wellness in my daily short videos, and also post some short videos with products.
Sell ​​health products and healthy foods, and use hooks to attract traffic to WeChat to do one-to-one health management customization (recipe customization, sale of healthy fat-reducing foods).
3. Think from the end to the beginning

Don’t just focus on becoming a fan without thinking about how to monetize it. Infer your user base based on the monetization method, infer what type of short videos the user base likes, and infer the video content you output.
For example, why did I start working on Douyin after working on Kuaishou? Because I didn’t find a way to monetize.
It’s just that it’s easy for me to create this kind of content, and I also like to see my fans increase rapidly, but the crowd is not right, so no matter how many fans I have, there are no conversions.
4. Take-it-as-it-is thinking

Colleagues are the best teachers. Instead of just copying others, you should incorporate your own insights and make them your own content.
In the past six months, Douyin has begun to crack down on homogeneous content, such as some chicken soup talk accounts, whose copywriting is infinitely similar, selling anxiety, and harvesting leeks. In 2019-2020, direct imitation would have a good effect, but it doesn’t work now.
As for those who want to join the short video track, if you have no experience, you can refer to your peers, imitate them first and then surpass them.
If your peers have helped you verify through the system that this content can be popular on Douyin, you don’t need to waste time testing which content can be popular. It will not be too late to surpass them once you have a foundation.
5. Hotspot thinking

When running your own media, you need to have a hot-spot mindset, which can also be applied to the operation of your account.
Turn on: Hotspot assistant switch, find topics related to your field to create content, which can play a great role in promoting traffic after being linked.
Douyin search: huge amount of calculations, enter keywords related to your field in the homepage URL, and see which topics are popular. Adding this topic to the copy will also have good search traffic.

03. Methodology for making every item a hit

How to determine whether it is a hit or not, the number of video views increases dramatically in a short period of time, and all data are 99+.
1. Make good use of third-party data platforms

There are many Douyin data platforms on the market. You can search for your industry keywords in popular short videos to filter out your benchmark videos. You can also use massive algorithms to check the popularity of the keyword.
In addition, you must have some colleagues you are following, and you can imitate what they are promoting recently.
For example, if one person pushes it, I may not imitate it. If ten people push it, then I will study it. If a hundred people push it, then I will imitate it immediately.
For example: My colleagues are all promoting Notland Vitamin Tablets, and I saw that hundreds of anchors are promoting them. Since they are my colleagues, I must promote them too!
2. Achieve unity between people and numbers

That is to say, find out the account's preferences and what kind of videos it likes. Once you understand it, you can then give it the right kind of video content.
At the same time, test out the popular content of the account, make a video library as a template, and reshoot it every time. Popular content will become popular no matter when it is, so be sure to shoot your popular content a hundred times, or even more.
Regardless of the method used to find hits, the video content has been tested. One is that it has been tested by peers, so we use it as a benchmark for remaking; the other is that it has been tested by ourselves, so I will keep shooting and it will keep becoming popular.
For example, I have a calf release video that has been going viral, and I shot 70 of them in one day.
For the same model, change clothes, angles, horizontal and vertical screens, backgrounds, action sequences, etc.
For the same video, 3 pieces of clothing * 3 angles (front shot, left and right side shot) * 2 (horizontal and vertical screens) * 2 different backgrounds * 2 action sequences = 72 completely different videos were shot.
Of course, it would be even better if you have a professional editor. He can edit hundreds of different videos from one video, and there is no problem with that.
We do this for only one purpose, which is to remove duplications and prevent the anti-cheating system of TikTok from being triggered, which would lead to you being judged as violating regulations such as uploading videos in batches or moving them.
Keep enough video inventory, put it in the draft box, and edit the copy. This is the fuel for the account, so make sure you have enough! !

04. Main monetization methods

There are many ways to monetize on Douyin. I mainly earn commissions by selling products through short videos, plus a small amount of live streaming.
Specific operation method: The content of the account can be divided into the following categories: knowledge popularization to increase fans, bullet video to attract traffic, product usage to sell goods, etc.
Knowledge popularization and fan-increasing categories are altruistic short videos, which are designed to enhance our professionalism, build our personalities and effectively attract targeted fans;
Use videos to drive traffic to our private domain for monetization;
The use of the product is to create a product review video, which shows how to use the product. You can sell the product and make money by putting it on the shared cart and someone places an order.
A small amount of live streaming to sell goods is done when the video is popular, when there are more people and the audience is more accurate.
