5 tips for shooting short videos!

Do you feel like I always shoot videos that are not quite right? The content is good, the rhythm is moderate, but there is something weird about them, making them look amateurish at first glance.

It is very likely that you used the shot improperly: no shot division, inappropriate framing position, etc.

Today we will talk about what shot scale is and how to use it correctly.

01 What is the scene

The field of view refers to the range of the subject in the picture.

The composition of a video affects the user's visual experience. It guides the user's eyes and makes the user's visual focus fall on the most prominent part of the picture. Learning how to use shot size is equivalent to learning how to pull users into the thinking of the video creator.

Moreover, the reasonable use of scene scale can bring users a better visual experience, and can also add a lot of layering to the video, making the video more advanced.

The shot is generally divided into long shot, panoramic shot, medium shot, close shot and close-up.

02 Use of scene scale

Knowing that the rational use of shot scale can bring us many benefits, what is the composition of different shot scales? In what situations are they suitable for use?

1. Vision

Picture: The long shot is generally used to show the overall picture of the environment far away from the camera, showing the characters and the vast spatial environment around them, the natural scenery and large scenes of mass activities.

Use: Usually used to express grand and shocking scenes, and is often used for scenery and to explain the environment and background of the characters; it also has the function of expressing emotions.

Advantages: Good at expressing the characteristics of large objects.

2. Panorama

Picture: Panorama is used to show the overall picture of the scene and the full-body movements of the characters.

Usage: Usually used to explain the relationship between environment and characters, mostly used for building appearance, character entry, plot reversal, etc.

Advantages: Panoramic images can more fully illustrate the close relationship between characters and the environment than long shots, and can express specific characters through specific environments.

3. Midground

Picture: The lower edge of the shooting frame is stuck around the person's knees (waist) or part of the scene.

Note: But generally it should not be stuck exactly at the knee (waist) area, because getting stuck at the joints is taboo in camera composition. Such as neck, waist joints, leg joints, foot joints and so on.

Use: Mostly used in situations where characters use body language to express emotions, character dialogues, inner monologues, changes in time and location, etc. When there are multiple characters, the mid shot can clearly show the relationships between the characters.

Advantages: Better expression of the character's identity, actions, and purpose of the actions.

4. Close-up

Picture: Shooting a person above the chest or a part of an object is called a close shot.

Use: Mostly used to express character emotions, emphasize character expressions, and communicate feelings between characters.

Advantages: It can portray the character of the characters most powerfully, and the sense of closeness created by the close view is more likely to leave a deep impression on users.

5. Close-up

Picture: A shot of a person above the chest or a part of an object is called a close shot.

Usage: Often used to highlight the characteristics and details of a character's facial expressions, thereby expressing the character's psychological activities and emotions; also often used to prompt information, create suspense, etc.

Note: Do not abuse it frequently, otherwise it will make people bored and weaken the expressiveness of close-ups.

Advantages: Characters or other objects can leave a strong impression on the audience.

Note: When different shot sizes are used in combination, the switching of shot sizes should be gradual. This means that when switching shots, the jump in scene size cannot be too big, otherwise the audience will feel that the picture jumps too much and becomes incomprehensible.

Because when people observe things, they follow a step-by-step approach, looking at the whole first and then the details. The gradual transition from the panoramic view to the mid shot and close shot will make the audience feel clear and natural.

Conclusion

That’s all I want to say about the scene. To sum it up:

1. There are five types of shot: long shot, panoramic shot, medium shot, close-up, and close-up.

2. Different angles of view are suitable for use in different situations.

3. When switching shots, the scene should be gradual.

That’s all there is to it.
