Can people with diabetes eat mooncakes? Be careful about "sugar-free mooncakes" and don't eat them casually

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, it is a Chinese custom to gather with family members, enjoy the moon, drink tea and eat mooncakes. But a friend with diabetes asked Huazi whether he could eat mooncakes since they contain both oil and sugar. He saw "sugar-free mooncakes" on the market. Would eating them not raise blood sugar levels?

Huazi told him that people with diabetes can eat mooncakes, but they cannot eat too many. The "sugar-free mooncakes" on the market are not truly "sugar-free" and cannot be eaten casually.

1. Correctly view the diet control of diabetics. People with diabetes know that they need to control their diet, so they dare not touch many foods. This often leads to misunderstandings about diet control, resulting in malnutrition. In fact, strictly speaking, there is no food that diabetics need to completely avoid. Diet control for diabetics refers to the control of total calories consumed, not the reduction of food types. Reducing the types of food consumed is likely to lead to malnutrition and more likely to cause complications.

Sugar, protein, and fat are all essential nutrients for the human body. Diabetic patients are not completely unable to eat sugar, but they need to control the amount they eat and not eat too much.

2. Can diabetic patients eat "sugar-free mooncakes"? During the processing of mooncakes, a lot of oil and sugar need to be added. Many diabetic patients regard mooncakes as "poison" and dare not eat them. In fact, as long as blood sugar monitoring is done well, proper exercise is performed, hypoglycemic drugs are adjusted in time, and appropriate methods are adopted, diabetic patients can also enjoy mooncakes and avoid complications.

For the sake of taste, sucrose and glucose are usually added to mooncakes. After being absorbed, these sugars will quickly increase blood sugar, so they are not recommended for diabetics. Diabetics can choose "sugar-free mooncakes" with low-calorie sweeteners such as xylitol and maltitol. These sweeteners are different from real sugar and have less impact on blood sugar.

3. Be aware that "sugar-free mooncakes" are not really sugar-free. It should be noted that although "sugar-free mooncakes" are marked as sugar-free, they only do not contain added sugars such as sucrose and glucose. However, mooncakes are made of flour. After digestion, flour will decompose into glucose, which will increase blood sugar, so "sugar-free mooncakes" cannot be eaten casually.

When eating mooncakes, it is recommended to eat 1-2 taels each time to feel the festive atmosphere, and do not eat too much. When eating mooncakes, remember to reduce the intake of staple food and fat. If you are taking α-glucosidase inhibitors (such as acarbose, voglibose, etc.), you can take them with mooncakes to delay glucose absorption and avoid postprandial blood sugar increase.

4. Pay attention to a balanced diet when eating mooncakes. Diabetics should pay attention to one thing: don't eat mooncakes to your heart's content. When eating mooncakes, you also need to eat normal meals to ensure that your body has adequate intake of protein, dietary fiber, and trace elements, and to ensure a balanced nutrition.

Although moon-viewing is at night, it is recommended to eat mooncakes for breakfast with milk and vegetables to meet the need for food diversification. In addition, during the day, the sugar brought by the mooncakes can be consumed through work, study and other activities.

Diabetics do not need to restrict their intake of sugary foods too strictly, because "starvation cannot cure diabetes." The rise in blood sugar is the result of tissue cells being unable to use glucose normally. Dietary control is to reduce total calorie intake, not excessive sugar restriction. Therefore, the treatment of diabetes is a combination of dietary control, exercise and drugs to allow tissue cells to use sugar.

In summary, diabetics are not prohibited from eating mooncakes. They can choose "sugar-free mooncakes" to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with their families. However, it should be noted that "sugar-free mooncakes" are not completely sugar-free. Do not consume them in excess. When eating mooncakes, you should monitor your blood sugar level. If your blood sugar level rises abnormally, you should adjust your blood sugar-lowering treatment plan under the guidance of a doctor.
