Amazing! This offshore wind turbine can withstand up to 17-level typhoon

At 13:37 on December 7, the world's first typhoon-resistant floating offshore wind turbine was successfully connected to the grid and generated electricity at the Yangjiang offshore wind farm in Guangdong. This marks that my country is the first country in the world to have the independent research and development, manufacturing, installation and operation capabilities of large-capacity typhoon-resistant floating offshore wind turbines, which is of positive significance for promoting the upgrading of my country's offshore wind power high-end equipment manufacturing and tapping the potential of deep-sea wind energy resources.

The world's first typhoon-resistant floating offshore wind turbine and my country's first floating offshore wind power platform together form the "Three Gorges Leader", with a single unit capacity of 5.5 megawatts. It is led by China Three Gorges New Energy (Group) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Three Gorges Group, and independently developed in collaboration with scientific research institutions such as the Three Gorges Shanghai Institute and domestic wind turbine manufacturers.

"Three Gorges Leader"

Floating offshore wind power technology is expected by the industry to be "the main technology for the development of offshore wind power in the future", and has been explored in many countries and regions. Compared with traditional wind turbines fixed on the offshore seabed, floating units can realize the vision of deployment in the deep sea, while obtaining stable and high-quality wind power resources in the deep sea, without affecting nearshore fisheries and other related industrial activities.

Typhoons are frequent in my country's South China Sea. The "Three Gorges Leader" is designed based on extreme wind, wave and current conditions that occur once every 50 years. It can withstand up to a level 17 typhoon, making new contributions to my country's offshore wind power exploration of typhoon-resistant technology and development in deeper waters.

Chasing the waves in the deep sea is not an easy task. Global floating offshore wind power generally faces difficulties such as technology, cost and low maturity of the industrial chain. Relying on relevant scientific research projects of the state and Guangdong Province, Three Gorges Energy and related enterprises in the industrial chain have successively overcome the key technologies of floating offshore wind power such as typhoon-resistant wind turbines, semi-submersible foundations and mooring systems, ballast control, dynamic cable development, "wind turbine + platform" integrated towing and installation under conditions of frequent typhoons, complex sea conditions and severe waves. The main solutions are all domestically developed core technologies.
