The China Earthquake Networks Center officially determined that at 01:45 on January 8, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred in Menyuan County, Haibei Prefecture, Qinghai (37.77 degrees north latitude, 101.26 degrees east longitude), with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

The epicenter is 54 kilometers away from Menyuan County and 136 kilometers away from Xining City. The average altitude within 5 kilometers of the epicenter is about 3,674 meters, and the population near the epicenter is relatively sparse.

Five earthquakes occurred in Menyuan County, Qinghai within one hour

Subsequently, four more earthquakes occurred in Menyuan County: a magnitude 4.1 earthquake at 1:55, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake at 1:59, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake at 2:09, and a magnitude 3.4 earthquake at 2:33.

The earthquake caused significant shaking in many nearby cities in Gansu, including Zhangye, Wuwei, Jinchang, Lanzhou, and Linxia.

The Ministry of Emergency Management and the China Earthquake Administration sent a working group to the scene overnight to assist local authorities in disaster investigation, resettlement of the masses, and earthquake trend analysis.

Up to now, the national comprehensive fire rescue teams of Qinghai and Gansu provinces have dispatched a total of 55 vehicles and 499 people to the epicenter for rescue, and a total of 2,260 people from surrounding provinces have assembled and are on standby.
