Scientists discovered a galaxy with a huge hole. Could it be the remains of a violent "war"?

All current scientific observations and discoveries have not shown any evidence of the existence of a high-level civilization in the universe, let alone a third-level civilization. However, scientists have discovered a strange galaxy whose core seems to have been "violently demolished" by a terrifying force, leaving behind a huge cavity with a diameter of 17,000 light years!

So, what is it that has such a terrifying power to create such a galaxy? Let's find out together.

Strange R5519 Galaxy/

In May 2020, a study was published in the journal Nature Astronomy. It was based on the spectral data of the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It discovered a very strange galaxy. The reason why this galaxy is strange is that due to the gravitational effect, the core star clusters of most galaxies will form a ball of light very densely, but the core of this galaxy is a huge void with a diameter of more than 17,000 light years.

This galaxy is about 10.8 billion light-years away from us. Because the core is a huge void, this galaxy looks like a rare ring. Scientific research believes that this galaxy is by no means a primitive galaxy, but has undergone an unnatural violent evolution process. The root of this violence is likely to be a "death duel" between two galaxies.

Scientists analyzed that the predecessor of this galaxy should be a disk galaxy, which was hit head-on by another galaxy and passed through it, thus knocking a large hole in the core of the disk galaxy. Further research found that the speed of star formation in the ring of this ring galaxy is very fast, 50 times the speed of star formation in the Milky Way.

This proves the existence of this impact from another perspective. It was the huge impact that pushed the gas and dust of the galaxy into the ring-shaped part at the edge, breaking the gravitational balance there, which led to the acceleration of nebula gathering speed and greatly accelerated star formation speed.

Scientists have also discovered the culprit that started the collision "war", namely G5593. It was the "violent demolition" of G5593 that penetrated the core of R5519, which led to the situation we see now.

Galaxy collisions are a constant in the universe

There have been various theories about how the universe appeared and was formed since ancient times. After observation and research by astronomers of all generations, especially the discovery of more and more evidence by modern science, a standard cosmological model with the Big Bang theory as its core has gradually been formed.

Although this model is not perfect yet, among all theories of the birth and evolution of the universe, it is the only one that has a lot of evidence to support it and is most consistent with the evolution phenomena of celestial bodies in the universe. Therefore, this theory has been supported and recognized by the mainstream scientific community, especially the astronomical community.

According to this theory, the evolution of the universe is determined by two major factors: gravity and repulsion. Modern research shows that on a large scale, repulsion is dominant, and the main force of repulsion is dark energy, which accounts for 68.3% of the total mass-energy of the universe; on a relatively small scale, gravity is dominant, and the dominant factor is dark matter, which accounts for 26.8% of the total mass-energy of the universe.

In addition to the game between these two forces, all visible matter such as galaxies and stars, including everything we can see normally, only accounts for 4.9% of the total mass and energy of the universe and participates in the gravitational force of dark matter.

Repulsion is dominant, and on a large scale it is manifested in the expansion of the universe since its birth; while the game of gravity is the mutual attraction between nearby celestial bodies on a relatively small scale. For example, nebula dust attracts each other and condenses into stars and planets; the gravity of stars such as the sun attracts planets and other celestial bodies to orbit around themselves; galaxies attract each other and become larger and larger through collisions.

Therefore, when galaxies first appeared after the birth of the universe, they were relatively small. They became larger after the continuous collision and fusion of nearby galaxies under the mutual gravitational force. Our Milky Way also formed its current size after colliding with some galaxies.

Scientific observations and research suggest that due to the huge mutual gravitational force between the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxies, the Andromeda galaxy, which is 2.54 million light-years away from us, is approaching us at a speed of about 300 kilometers per second, and will collide in the next 3 to 4 billion years.

Of course, this collision is much gentler than the violent collision of G5593 and R5519. Scientists even believe that the sparse stars will not be greatly impacted, but will eventually merge into a larger elliptical galaxy. This is a matter of the distant future, and it is impossible to predict whether humans will still exist at that time. Even if they do exist, they may have already left the Milky Way.

The revelation that the R5519 galaxy brings to the astronomical community

The mystery of the R5519 galaxy seems to have been solved. Although it is the sequelae of unnatural evolutionary violence, this violence was not caused by the power of civilization. Generally speaking, it is still the force of nature. It’s just that this kind of galaxy collision is extremely rare.

The revelation that the peculiarity of this galaxy brings to scientists is not the collision itself, but the shape of the galaxy before it was hit. Based on the evolution modeling before and after the collision, scientists believe that the R5519 galaxy should have been a disk galaxy before it was hit.

According to the standard cosmological model, the universe was born about 13.82 billion years ago. The R5519 galaxy is 10.8 billion light-years away from us, which means that it takes light 10.8 billion years to reach our retina. Based on the relationship between the speed of light and distance, what we see is what the galaxy looked like 10.8 billion years ago, or about 3 billion years after the Big Bang.

If it is a disk-shaped galaxy, it would be inconsistent with the original inference of the standard cosmological model. According to the previous galaxy evolution theory, galaxies 3 billion years after the Big Bang could only be irregular and chaotic, and could not form such a regular disk-shaped galaxy.

With the increasing number of discoveries made by the Hubble Telescope and the recently launched Webb Telescope, the most distant galaxies seen by people are already 13.4 to 13.6 billion light-years away. These galaxies are infant galaxies that were born only 200 to 400 million years ago. The morphology of these galaxies greatly exceeds the expectations of the original cosmological model. So, do these new discoveries shake the standard cosmological model based on the Big Bang cosmology?

Indeed, these discoveries have stirred up some people who have always opposed the Big Bang theory, who believe that they have found evidence to overturn the standard cosmological model theory. However, the response of mainstream astronomers has poured cold water on these people: these discoveries are just the improvement and revision of the Big Bang theory on the evolution of galaxies, and it is ridiculous to think that this can overturn this theory.

Because the Big Bang theory has been supported by more and more evidence, some of which is ironclad. No other cosmological model in the world can be compared with this theory, not even close. These new discoveries only bring us closer to the truth and provide scientists with topics for further in-depth research.
