Zhong Nanshan's latest prediction! The second wave of COVID-19 may peak at the end of June!

On the morning of May 22, at the Biomedicine and Health Sub-Forum of the 2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum, Zhong Nanshan, recipient of the Medal of the Republic, stated that two vaccines that can cover the XBB variant have been preliminarily approved and will be available soon.

Zhong Nanshan said that based on various materials, there was a small peak of new coronavirus infection in late April and early May, "which is what we expected."

Zhong Nanshan said that the SEIRS model-based forecast shows that the peak of the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2023 will occur at the end of June , with about 65 million cases per week. Zhong Nanshan believes that one Omicron infected person can infect more than 30 people, and our (epidemic) prevention and control strategy has been adjusted from preventing infection in the past to preventing severe illness now, because infection is difficult to prevent.

Zhong Nanshan said that it is very important to develop vaccines with better protection against the XBB variant. He revealed that two vaccines against XBB have been preliminarily approved, and three or four more will be approved soon. "We can be ahead of the world in researching more effective vaccines."

On May 18, the World Health Organization's advisory group made recommendations on updating this year's COVID-19 vaccine booster shots, suggesting that the new vaccine should mainly target the currently dominant variant XBB.
