Like any other food, grapefruit is good, but it should not be consumed in excess, and it should not be used as the main means of losing weight.

1. Grapefruit, an excellent fruit for weight loss

Grapefruit has a calorie content of 42 kcal/100 g. It is a low-energy, low-fat, high-fiber fruit that helps with weight loss. A grapefruit contains 89% water, 8% to 9% carbon water, and other trace elements.

A large grapefruit weighing more than 2 jin has an edible part of about 800 grams. If a person eats 1/4 of a grapefruit (about 200 grams), he or she will consume about 80 kcal of calories, which is less than a small banana. Even if you eat half a grapefruit, the calories you consume are about 160 kcal, while if you want to replace it with winter dates with the same calories, you can only eat 6. In comparison, eating grapefruit is more enjoyable.

According to nutrition research, eating half a grapefruit before meals every day for more than 12 weeks can play a good role in weight loss. This is because some compounds in grapefruit can accelerate fat burning, while also increasing satiety and reducing the amount of food eaten at meals.

In addition, grapefruit also contains a large amount of vitamin C and minerals, and has a variety of health benefits such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer. For people who are prone to getting angry, eating grapefruit can reduce anger and inhibit oral ulcers. At the same time, grapefruit has a low glycemic index and is suitable for diabetic patients.

2. Although grapefruit is delicious, you can’t eat it like this!

1. Don’t eat too much

A common symptom of eating too much grapefruit is diarrhea. Grapefruit is a very cold food. Eating too much can cause spleen and stomach deficiency and diarrhea. In addition, grapefruit has a high water content. Eating a large amount of grapefruit can cause excessive water in the gastrointestinal tract, causing diarrhea.

People with weak spleen and stomach should not eat grapefruit in large quantities, as grapefruit contains plant acids and bitter glycosides that can irritate the gastrointestinal tract. Eating grapefruit in large quantities can cause continuous and strong irritation to the gastrointestinal mucosa, leading to gastrointestinal inflammation.

2. Patients with hypertension should not take it while taking medication

Otherwise, it may cause serious side effects such as a sudden drop in blood pressure. If you eat grapefruit while taking antihypertensive drugs, it is like taking an overdose of antihypertensive drugs, which will significantly reduce blood pressure and may even induce angina pectoris, myocardial infarction or stroke.

3. Do not take with certain medicines

Clinically, it has been found that for patients with hyperlipidemia, taking a tablet of Medecine with a glass of grapefruit juice is equivalent to taking 12 to 15 tablets of the same drug with a glass of water, which can achieve the lipid-lowering effect. Patients may experience muscle pain or even kidney disease as a result.

Some patients, while taking the anti-allergic drug terfenadine, if they eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice, may experience dizziness, palpitations, arrhythmia, etc. at the mildest, or even sudden death at the worst.

Other drugs that may have adverse reactions with grapefruit include: cyclosporine, caffeine, calcium channel blockers, cisapride, etc.

Drinking a glass of grapefruit juice may interact with the drug for 24 hours. Therefore, patients who are taking medication, especially the elderly, should not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice.

4. Women who take birth control pills should not eat

A study in the United States shows that grapefruit has the most prominent effect on birth control pills. Experts said, "If a woman who takes birth control pills eats 1-2 grapefruits after sex, or takes birth control pills directly with a large glass of grapefruit juice, she may become a mother because grapefruit hinders the absorption of birth control pills by women.

3. In addition to eating grapefruit, you also have these options!

First of all, we don’t recommend eating only fruits.

If you only eat fruits and eat less other foods, you will lack protein and fatty acids. You will become intolerant to hunger and often have a strong sense of hunger, so you will eat more and get fatter.

Eating only fruits for a long time can easily lead to deficiency of essential fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins, which can cause premature aging.

Secondly, under the premise of a balanced diet, a reasonable intake of fruits is very helpful for weight loss.

Effective weight loss requires two conditions: one is to create a calorie gap (i.e., calories consumed < calories consumed); the other is to control blood sugar . Because elevated blood sugar stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin, blood sugar is used to synthesize glycogen and fat under the action of insulin, which in turn lowers blood sugar levels. This process blocks the decomposition of body fat, stops fat burning in a short period of time, promotes fat accumulation, and leads to obesity.

Therefore, when choosing fruits, we must first eat them in moderation. According to the recommendations on fruit intake in the "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents", we can eat 200 to 350 grams of fruit every day.

Second, you should try to choose low GI fruits (GI value <55 is low GI food), in addition to grapefruit, there are papaya, dragon fruit, apples, plums, cherries, etc.

So, although grapefruit is good, don’t eat too much. When choosing a weight loss method, we need to be rational and stick to a balanced diet.
