Lumbar disc herniation is one of the most common causes of low back and leg pain. However, not all low back and leg pain is caused by lumbar disc herniation . If the lumbar disc degenerates, the annulus fibrosus ruptures, and the nucleus pulposus tissue protrudes and compresses the nerves or spinal cord, corresponding symptoms may occur, which is called lumbar disc herniation .

Lumbar disc herniation is common in young and middle-aged people, and more common in men than in women. The main manifestations are:

1. Low back pain: Low back pain is often the first symptom, mostly with soreness and swelling, which recurs repeatedly. It worsens after sitting or standing for a long time or being tired, and is relieved by lying down and resting.

2. Lower limb pain: If there is obvious compression of the nerve roots, radiating pain in the lower limbs may occur (the pain is radiating and may be accompanied by paresthesia or numbness in the corresponding nerve distribution area). The symptoms worsen when standing, walking, sneezing or coughing, and may be relieved by bed rest or specific body positions. In severe cases, the pain or numbness is persistent.

3. Symptoms of compression of the spinal cord or cauda equina: weakness, decreased sensation or numbness in both lower limbs, a feeling of walking on cotton when walking, and in severe cases, even urinary and bowel dysfunction.

Everyone has a lumbar disc, so why did mine protrude? The basis of lumbar disc herniation is the degeneration of the disc, lumbar trauma or long-term poor posture in work and life leading to rupture of the annulus fibrosus and protrusion of the nucleus pulposus, resulting in a series of symptoms.

Occupation, sports, and bad living habits are related to the occurrence of lumbar disc herniation; obesity, smoking, diabetes, pregnancy, etc. are risk factors for lumbar disc herniation.

1

Wear appropriate shoes

Patients with lumbar disc herniation should not wear high heels to avoid damaging the stability of the lumbar spine. It is recommended to wear moderately elastic and comfortable shoes to help prevent and treat low back pain.

2

Exercise properly

Developing regular exercise habits, such as fitness, swimming, etc., can help increase the stability of the lumbar muscles . Remember to do it according to your physical condition and within your ability.

3

Maintain correct posture and habits

In daily life, we should develop good working, studying and living postures and habits, and avoid walking, sitting or standing for long periods of time .

When standing, keep your back straight and your abdomen in. When walking, try to keep your head up and chest out to avoid hunching over. When sitting, keep your upper body straight, your back straight and don't bend forward. It is not recommended to sit on a too soft sofa or a stool without a backrest. It is best to choose a chair that conforms to the physiological curvature of the lumbar spine, and try to avoid sitting for a long time .

4

Pay attention to the correct bending posture

Avoid incorrect bending methods. When bending over to pick up something, you should first squat down, bend your knees, bring the object as close to your body as possible, and keep your abdominal muscles tense to protect your waist . Bend and pick up things "straight up and down".

5

Bed rest

For patients with lumbar disc herniation who are experiencing their first onset or patients with chronic lumbar disc herniation who are experiencing a sudden acute attack, bed rest is recommended .

However, if you have the conditions to lie flat, try to rest on a bed of a certain hardness. You can raise your calves, or bend your knees and relax your waist muscles . This can reduce the pressure on the intervertebral discs between the lumbar vertebrae, help reduce inflammation and edema, and thus relieve symptoms.

If symptoms such as pain and numbness cannot be relieved by rest, or if symptoms such as lower limb weakness and incontinence occur, you need to seek medical attention immediately .
