How did the holiday end so quickly? What influenced your feelings?

There is an old saying that "time flies by like an arrow, day and night pass by", which means that time is like running water, which never returns. When Chinese people lament the fleeting changes of time, they also have romantic poems and words such as "white clouds and gray dogs". The ancients experienced the flow of time from running water, falling flowers, and the changing of seasons. In modern life, we also have such feelings, "the holiday is over in a flash", "the time after get off work is gone in a flash", "Monday is really like a year". In different life situations, people have different views on time, so what makes such a difference?

Why did the holiday end so quickly?

Everyone says that the night before the workday is the most uncomfortable time. This is not only the voice of most workers, but also a psychological phenomenon with scientific basis, namely "holiday myth". British psychologist Hammond explained this phenomenon in this way: Most people feel that time passes faster after a long vacation or trying new things. Because all the experiences during this period will be transformed into a large number of memories, more than in daily life, so it will give people the illusion that time passes particularly quickly. On the contrary, when going to work or school, time will feel particularly slow. To put it more directly, people's activities are richer and more varied during the holidays. There are at least six to nine experiences worth remembering in a day. And the number of memories generated during the vacation, converted into daily life, takes at least two weeks to reach.

In fact, the passage of time is not subject to personal will, but the brain uses a completely different method to judge the passage of time. When people look back on the past, they will have an assessment of the length and speed of time, and the basis for the assessment is the occurrence of new things. The days pass slowly and make people feel unbearable, mostly because everything they experience is too ordinary and familiar. When it comes to vacation, there may be many memorable moments in a day, and the memory storage space is quickly filled. When the brain recalls this period of time, it will feel that it has experienced a lot, and thus think that time has passed particularly quickly.

Why does time seem to speed up as we grow older?

Similarly, in life, we all have this perception: the older we get, the faster time goes by. When we were young, we felt that a year was very long; when we grow up, a year goes by in a flash. Social surveys have also confirmed this point. Most people feel that the time between the ages of ten and twenty is very long, but the time between twenty and thirty does not seem as long as the previous ten years. After the age of thirty, people feel that time is unforgiving.

Scientists have also given an explanation for this phenomenon. As people age, they feel that time is passing faster because their memory is gradually declining. Humans usually accumulate the most memories between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five, because this is also the period when people experience the most new things in life, such as love, work, and school. Therefore, after a period of time, when you look back on your life experiences, you usually feel that time has flown by.

What influences your feelings?

We all know that the passage of time is inevitable. But sometimes we feel that time has passed in a flash, and sometimes it feels like a year has passed. There are many factors that cause our different perceptions of time.

1. The environment is different.

Psychologist Mary Sebego believes that the mechanized routine of life gives people the feeling that time is passing faster and faster. When we are in a familiar routine, the brain always repeats the same activities, which consumes relatively less energy. Some areas of the brain are involved in our perception of time, and the reduction of activities in these areas will reduce sensitivity to time. This also explains why time feels faster as we grow older. Because it takes longer for the brain to record new data, process and store information, the growth of age means constantly recording new data. As we grow older, we are exposed to fewer and fewer new things, so we feel that time is passing faster and faster.

2. Different mental states.

Einstein once said: "If you spend an hour sitting on a park bench with a beautiful woman, you will feel that only a minute has passed. But if you sit on a stove, a minute will seem like an hour." It can be seen that people's perception of time is affected by the activities they are doing and their psychological state. When we feel comfortable, we will reduce energy consumption, and the brain will operate more smoothly and mechanically, so when we are in a good mood, "happiness is always short-lived" and emotions are "powerful regulators of time perception."

3. Different levels of focus.

A sociologist believes that concentration also affects people's judgment of time. Different subjective perceptions of time depend on the degree of individual commitment to what they do. When a person devotes himself to a task and gains pleasure from it, he will definitely feel that time passes faster than when he is doing something he hates.

4. Impact of disease

Another factor that affects people's perception of time is illness. If a person feels that time passes slower than real time, it means that he may be physically unwell, and vice versa.

In short, we all know that time is fair. It does not make a difference because of personal wealth, knowledge, or insight, but only in subjective feelings. Time is precious, cherish it, live with a more relaxed and happy attitude, and have more wonderful memories.
