A long drought finally ends with a downpour? Beware of the sudden change from drought to flood!

"Sudden transition from drought to flood" refers to a meteorological and hydrological event in which high-intensity precipitation occurs in a short period of time and forms floods, following a situation in which there is no precipitation or little precipitation in the previous period and drought has already occurred .

Because the previous drought affected the vegetation and rainwater infiltration in the basin, under the same total rainfall, the floods caused by the sudden change from drought to flood often come faster and more violently, causing greater disasters. In addition, when precipitation comes, people often focus on alleviating the drought, which can also mislead the judgment of the flood control and drought relief situation to a certain extent.

How dangerous is the sudden change from drought to flood?

Drought causes the water in the soil to evaporate, causing the soil to shrink and crack . If there is heavy or prolonged rainfall, a large amount of precipitation will quickly seep into the ground . If the rainfall occurs on a slope , the soil is relatively thick , and the probability of triggering geological disasters is high, which can easily lead to secondary disasters such as mountain torrents, mudslides, and landslides. At the same time, the water level of rivers in small watersheds may suddenly increase, catching people off guard.

How to avoid risks correctly when encountering secondary disasters such as mountain torrents and mudslides?

Encountering a mudslide:

Residents in areas prone to flash floods and mudslides should pay attention to heavy rain warnings and be alert to abnormal sounds.

When escaping, run towards the hillsides on both sides that are perpendicular to the direction of the mudslide and avoid the concave slopes.

Do not hide in trees, do not stop, cross, and do not turn back.

Escape to areas with dense trees, as trees can block the advance of mudslides.

Trapped in a flash flood:

When the flood comes too quickly and there is no time to evacuate, immediately climb to the rooftop or other high places for temporary shelter.

Save your phone's battery in case you need to seek help for a long time.

When trapped in a flood, actively look for plastic basins, foam boards, wooden boards and other floating tools to save yourself.

Mountain torrents flow very fast, so do not swim easily to avoid being washed away.

Encountering urban flooding:

Do not stay in low-lying communities, sunken overpasses, underground transportation facilities and other areas prone to flooding and waterlogging.

Stay away from uncovered drains and underwater electrical wires to avoid casualties.

Pay close attention to weather forecasts and warnings, and do not go out unless necessary after a warning is issued.

When going out, you should avoid dangerous points and areas prone to flooding.

Be careful when driving in rainy weather, do not pass through flooded areas, and keep window-breaking tools in the car to prevent accidents.

While driving:

Avoid passing through flooded roads : When a rainstorm comes, if you are driving a vehicle, you should pay attention to the surrounding environment, avoid passing through flooded roads, and find a safe parking place with higher terrain as soon as possible. Do not rush through under an overpass or in a low-lying area to prevent your vehicle from being flooded.

Follow the principle of "one look, two probes, slow down and pass"

At first glance : if there are splashes on the water surface, the water is generally very shallow and you can drive through; if there are waves on the water surface, it means the water depth is more than 20 centimeters, so do not wade rashly.

Second exploration : If the water depth exceeds half of the tire, water may flow into the engine's air intake. It is not recommended to drive through water at this time.

Pass slowly : It is recommended that the vehicle speed should not exceed 10 kilometers per hour during wading.

If your vehicle stalls in standing water, quickly assess the situation and do not restart the engine again. If water starts to enter the vehicle, abandon the vehicle and escape as quickly as possible.
