Beware of poisoning!

It is reported that this year,

Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and other places in my country

There have been a number of cases of poisoning from homemade medicinal liquor.

14 people have died.

It is mainly caused by Aconitum and Gelsemium elegans.

To protect public life safety

In this issue, let’s focus on what causes poisoning from homemade medicinal wine.

The main causes of homemade medicinal liquor poisoning incidents

One is accidental ingestion or misuse:

(1) Poisoning may occur when the roots of Gastrodia elata are mistakenly taken as roots of white dog intestines, quinquefolia roots, wild ivy roots, etc. and soaked in medicinal liquor.

The scientific name of Gelsemium elegans is Gelsemium elegans, commonly known as big tea medicine, rotten intestine grass, mountain arsenic, etc. It is widely distributed in southern China, and the whole plant is highly toxic, especially the roots and young leaves .

After accidental ingestion, symptoms such as nausea and vomiting will appear within 10 minutes, and abdominal pain, cramps, dizziness, slurred speech, respiratory failure, and coma will appear within 30 minutes . In severe cases, it may even lead to death. It can be called living arsenic.

(2) Mistakenly believing in the effects of Datura and mistakenly soaking Datura seeds in wine for drinking.

The whole plant of Datura is poisonous. It contains scopolamine, which has antispasmodic, sedative, analgesic and anesthetic functions. The fruit, especially the seeds, are the most toxic, followed by the young leaves. The dried leaves are less toxic than the fresh leaves.

Symptoms of Datura poisoning usually appear half an hour after ingestion, and as fast as 20 minutes and no later than 3 hours. Symptoms usually disappear or basically disappear within 24 hours. In severe cases, the patient will enter into drowsiness, convulsions, cyanosis, and finally coma and death after 24 hours.

The second is improper use: due to not understanding the properties of medicinal materials and improper usage methods, people drink homemade medicinal wine containing Chuanwu, Caowu, (Aconitum) Fuzi, etc.

Aconitine is the main toxic ingredient found in plants such as Aconitum carmichaelii, Aconitum kusnezoffii, and Aconitum rubrum . It is extremely toxic. 0.2 mg of pure aconitine can cause poisoning , and 3-5 mg can cause death.

The main effect is to paralyze the sensory nerves and central nervous system. Symptoms of poisoning include numbness of the lips, intense burning sensation in the stomach, followed by numbness of the whole body, convulsions of the limbs, etc. In severe cases, respiratory depression, low blood pressure, and arrhythmia may occur. The clinical onset time varies from several minutes to 3 hours, with 30 minutes to 1 hour being the most common.

How to prevent poisoning from homemade medicinal liquor?

1. Do not pick similar herbs randomly to soak medicinal wine by yourself.

2. There are many types of Chinese medicinal materials, which are difficult for non-professionals to distinguish. Non-professionals are not recommended to use Chinese medicinal materials to make wine on their own.

3. Do not trust secret recipes or folk prescriptions at will , and avoid making medicinal liquor without understanding its properties. If you really need to use toxic Chinese medicinal materials due to your condition, you should go to a medical institution and use them under the guidance of a physician or pharmacist, and clarify the usage and conditions of various Chinese medicinal materials and medicinal liquors.

4. Do not buy or drink liquor that has no labels, has unclear ingredients for soaking Chinese medicinal materials, or has an unknown origin.

5. Food business operators should strictly comply with the provisions of the Food Safety Law and must not illegally use Chinese medicinal materials to make alcoholic beverages, nor sell alcoholic beverages that have no legal source.

6. Strengthen the popularization of science and education on poisonous animals and plants and poisoning caused by homemade medicinal liquor , so that the public can recognize common poisonous animals and plants and avoid accidental ingestion or misuse.

What should I do if I get poisoned by drinking homemade medicinal wine?

If you are poisoned after drinking homemade medicinal wine, you should seek medical treatment nearby as soon as possible.

After poisoning by Datura, the stomach should be washed and then an antidote should be taken orally. Currently, there is no specific antidote for poisoning by gelsinine or aconitine. In the early stages of poisoning, physical stimulation to induce vomiting and symptomatic treatment are used .

It is also recommended to take the poisoned samples to the hospital for doctor's diagnosis and medication.
