Giant Panda: Mine, mine, all mine!

Giant Panda: Mine, mine, all mine!

"He He", "Jiu Jiu" and "Ping Ping" are here with their newly renovated venues~

01

New Year meets new field~

Creating a natural and diverse living environment, especially one that is slightly challenging for animals, is one of the most effective ways to improve the welfare of wild animals in zoos. In this renovation of the giant panda enclosure, we have added more facilities that simulate the natural environment, providing the giant pandas with a richer living space, while also allowing us to observe their living habits in their natural state more closely and realistically.

1

Shallow water, long flow

In order to restore the wild living environment of giant pandas as much as possible, we dug a dry canal to imitate the mountain streams in Sichuan. When the rainy season comes, a dry stream landscape will appear. Rainwater will flow down the dry canal and slowly seep into the ground, forming a shallow pool of water.

Imitating the style of my hometown, the food tastes better~

Along the banks of this stream, stones, dead trees and fallen leaves are randomly scattered, adding a sense of layering and interest to the environment. The splashing of rocks and the reflection of dead leaves form a unique natural picture. The dead trees and fallen leaves make this dry stream closer to nature, while also providing the giant pandas with more space to move around and opportunities to explore.

"Hehe", "Jiujiu" and "Pingping" showed great interest and love for these changes in the environment. They would play and roll in the fallen leaves; sometimes they would choose a suitable stone, lean on it comfortably, and enjoy the delicious bamboo shoots~

2

High and low, free choice

For the perches, we chose mostly lychee and pine woods, which have more diverse and natural shapes. These woods are not only beautiful and durable, but also safer and more stable for giant pandas, and suitable for them to lie down or lean on more comfortably.

High and low, clear layers

Before the new perches are put into use, the careful keepers become quality inspectors and personally test whether the perches are firm.

Taking into account the giant pandas’ habit of sleeping in high places, we made use of as many existing trees in the venue as possible during the design and renovation, cleverly connecting the perches with these trees to create a staggered movement path and a layered landscape effect.

At the same time, we also designed a bear cave to provide the three little ones with a private and quiet space.

Bear cave connected to the perch

A perch was also built above the bear cave, connecting the entire venue and forming a complete movement path.

Such staggered perches can provide giant pandas with more choices, encouraging them to explore more, move more, and find a lifestyle and activity path that suits them.

They can take a nap and eat on the perches, or climb directly up the trees from the perches, which increases the opportunities for activities and the diversity of path choices. This not only improves the utilization rate of the perches, but also gives the giant pandas more space to explore and move freely.

The three little ones responded very positively to their new living environment and gave us many surprises.

"He He" and "Jiu Jiu" like to challenge higher places, often climbing up to the treetops along the perches to enjoy the view and tranquility brought by the heights. In contrast, "Ping Ping", who has a more peaceful personality, prefers spacious and flat perches and chooses to spend more rest time on different perches.

Positive tag ~ mine, mine, all mine ~

We hope to make their living environment more diverse by providing different heights and space options, so that pandas with different personalities can find their favorite lifestyles and paths of action. This will not only improve their quality of life, but also show our tourists a more natural and vivid side of them.

3

More greenery, more exploration

In order to further improve the quality of the giant pandas' living environment, we have planted many green plants in the three outdoor areas, such as osmanthus, photinia, maple, privet, and Acer palmatum.

Let me smell it~

Three larger trees were also transplanted. These newly added plants can enrich the natural landscape of the venue, and also provide the giant pandas with a living space closer to nature, enhancing their sense of security and comfort.

In the end, it was the little tree that took it all.

After a period of time, when winter turns to spring, these green plants will gradually wake up from their dormant period. They will slowly integrate into the existing ecological environment, complementing the original facilities and natural elements.

02

The leaf-falling experience is great!

During the outdoor field renovation period, the enrichment benefits for "Hehe", "Jiujiu" and "Pingping" were also great!

In order to allow them to enjoy a rich and diverse living environment in the exhibition hall, we have introduced a variety of natural bedding materials, including wood chips, wood fibers, bark, straw, etc. that have been strictly disinfected.

We also collect some fallen leaves and some fresh branches, leaves and vines from unmanned areas of the park and place them in the exhibition hall for them to play and explore.

The fallen leaves in these places are cleaner and safer, and the fresh branches, leaves and vines can greatly enrich their sensory experience, providing them with more opportunities for interaction and exploration fun.

They will rub these bedding materials on their bodies and fall asleep sweetly on them. In this way, the three little ones have a soft and comfortable place to sleep and more fun to explore.

Now, with the renovation of the outdoor area completed, the three little ones can not only continue to enjoy the colorful living environment in the inner exhibition hall, but also explore the new outdoor environment to their heart's content.

Whether climbing perches, resting on high places, or wandering among the newly planted greenery, He He, Jiu Jiu, and Ping Ping can find the lifestyle that suits them best. This diverse environment not only meets their different needs and preferences, but also promotes their physical and mental health.

Through these various environmental improvement measures, we hope to create a living environment for giant pandas that is as close to nature as possible, while also allowing them to move around more.

There is food, play, and fun exploration. Resting on trees, walking among green plants, playing in the pool, and eating bamboo shoots with your back against a rock, it's so much fun! Everyone is welcome to come and see the pandas and visit their new outdoor area~
