Xunlei launches copyright protection alliance: creating new stories to impress the capital market?

This afternoon, Xunlei initiated and hosted the "CC2014 China Internet Copyright Protection Action Plan". Xunlei joined hands with Phoenix.com, iQiyi, Pony.com, Stellar Media, Bona Films and many other Internet companies and copyright holders to participate.

It was discovered that Xunlei's arch-rivals Youku Tudou, Sohu Video and other video company partners were not on the list.
Wang Shanna, President of Xunlei, said on the spot that Xunlei is willing to work with more partners to jointly build an environment for formalization and legalization of the industry, set up three platforms for technological rights protection, collective rights protection, and infringement disclosure, and build a long-term mechanism for copyright protection through more complete protection measures based on the cooperation of all parties and a complete copyright protection platform.
I thought I had heard it wrong. Piracy has always been Xunlei's inherent "original sin", which is as difficult to get rid of as a curse. This time it actually publicly announced anti-piracy. What happened in between?
Everyone still remembers that as early as September 2009, Sohu Video, Jidong.com, Youpengpule and others formed an "Anti-Piracy Alliance" to specifically accuse Thunder and others of violating the bottom line of the industry. They said that Thunder's genuine rate was less than 1%, and that they believed that Thunder had made an "indispensable contribution" to the loss of Chinese films. At the same time, they launched a large-scale lawsuit, seeking compensation of 5 million yuan.
At that time, the industry generally analyzed that Xunlei adopted two representative piracy models, playing online in the name of netizens' uploads, but hiding its own search for "non-Xunlei" servers to find pirated content. Today, four years later, China's video industry has undergone earth-shaking changes, forming a pattern of multiple strong players such as Youku Tudou, iQiyi Sohu Video, and LeTV. However, copyright content, especially exclusive copyright, is still one of the core competitiveness of each company. Xunlei has gradually lost its direction in this battle and has not yet gotten out of the "piracy" quagmire.
Xunlei of course denies the accusation of piracy, believing that it has fully implemented legalization and has achieved remarkable results, but the industry does not think so.
As we all know, copyrighted content can only be produced by yourself or purchased, both of which are very expensive. Xunlei, which was short of money, once thought of using the online disk Dropbox and Microsoft SkyDrive model, but it was still difficult to get rid of the suspicion of piracy. Xunlei and Qvod were even included in the US's monitoring list of pirated distributors, which can be said to be "famous both at home and abroad."
Even the prospectus that Xunlei submitted to the U.S. SEC in 2011 disclosed multiple sources of income, including revenue from download services and the video service "Xunlei Kankan". Xunlei was accused of making a net profit of 400 million through "cloud piracy", and the American Film Association also threatened to sue Xunlei.
Xunlei, which is plagued by copyright issues, has never given up on the opportunity to go public, but the road to going public has been quite bumpy. As early as 2011, Xunlei submitted an application to the SEC for listing, but ultimately failed. Recently, there was news that Xiaomi invested 200 million yuan, and Xunlei will launch an IPO again as early as March this year.
It is believed that Xunlei has always been unable to shake off its not-so-glorious past as the "king of piracy", and copyright has become one of the most important obstacles to its IPO. In December 2010, in order to completely shake off its piracy image, Xunlei sold one of its three major businesses, Dog Search, for 10,000 yuan, which caused an uproar in the industry. This time, it will still be difficult to convince the capital market when it hits the IPO market again, and it is likely to repeat the mistake of another bloody IPO.
This time, Xunlei took the lead in launching the "China Internet Copyright Protection Action Plan", without the participation of video partners such as Youku Tudou. The symbolic significance may be greater than the actual significance. Perhaps this is just a new story in the capital market. It depends on whether others believe it or not.
In fact, Xunlei is also actively seeking market opportunities other than copyright and creating more new stories. Not long ago, Xunlei also joined hands with BesTV to enter the field of Internet TV. Whether this move can clear the obstacles for Xunlei to go public remains to be seen.
