OLED is on the way out, and the quantum dot era is opening up in the global color TV industry

At this stage, OLED TVs have not yet entered the consumer market on a large scale, but more far-sighted TV manufacturers have turned their attention to using quantum dot technology to produce TV displays. Samsung and LG have planned to apply it to the next generation of TV products.

Just as the global color TV manufacturing industry is focusing on the two major Korean brands, hoping to make breakthroughs in quantum dot technology, domestic color TV manufacturer TCL has taken the lead in launching China's first quantum dot TV - TV+ Quantum Dot TV H9700, announcing the beginning of the quantum dot era in the global color TV industry.

Quantum dots are a very cutting-edge nanomaterial with a grain diameter between 2 and 10 nanometers. The photoelectric properties of quantum dots are very unique. When stimulated by electricity or light, they will emit very pure, high-quality monochromatic light of various colors according to the diameter of the quantum dots. When applied to display technology, quantum dots can emit high-quality red/green monochromatic light with a concentrated energy spectrum, which completely surpasses the phosphor luminescence characteristics of traditional LED backlights and achieves better imaging colors. Therefore, quantum dot display technology is regarded as the best solution for efficiently improving the color gamut value of color TVs in the future, and it is also a new technology vane for the global display industry.

According to market research company Display Search, the shipment of quantum dot TVs will reach 1.95 million units next year, accounting for only 0.8% of the entire market, and is expected to rise to 25.5 million units in 2020. This technology will sweep the global color TV manufacturing industry at a rapid development speed.

It is worth noting that recently, companies such as Samsung, LG, and Apple have stated that they are actively promoting the research and development of quantum dot display technology, and companies such as Amazon and Asus have also adopted quantum dot technology to varying degrees to improve the picture quality of their products. With TCL taking the lead in releasing quantum dot TVs, the international quantum dot display camp has begun to take shape.

Although the industry generally believed that OLED was the next generation display technology and had high hopes for it, in recent years, due to cost and technical limitations, OLED's performance has been disappointing. The launch of TCL's quantum dot TV has broken the window of innovation in color TV display technology in recent years and completely changed the development direction of color TV display technology.

Chen Guanglang, Chief Technology Officer of TCL Multimedia, said, "The H9700 is not only the first to apply quantum dot display technology and true color display technology, but also equipped with the highest color gamut and resolution screen of CSOT, achieving 110% NTSC color gamut coverage in one fell swoop." At present, the color gamut of OLED on the market can only reach 100% in theory. In comparison, the H9700 has a wider color gamut coverage, more precise color control, and purer red, green and blue, representing the highest level of current color TV products.

According to authoritative test data from the National Radio and Television Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, under the NTSC standard, the color gamut of ordinary LED TVs is only 72%, the first-generation high-color gamut TV is only 82%, the second-generation high-color gamut TV is about 96%, and the actual color gamut of OLED TVs is 89%, while the color gamut coverage of TCL TV+ quantum dot TV H9700 is as high as 110%. This data also fully proves the outstanding advantages of quantum dot TVs in picture display.

Lu Renbo, deputy secretary-general of the China Electronic Commerce Association and a well-known home appliance expert, believes that the emergence of quantum dot TVs will undoubtedly put more pressure on OLED TVs. The advent of quantum dot TVs will usher in a major transformation in the color TV display industry, and the color TV market will continue to develop rapidly towards clear and thorough displays.

As quantum dot technology gradually matures, the world's first-tier TV brands are actively developing large-size quantum dot TV products. Among them, Samsung Electronics plans to mass-produce QD LCD TVs in the first quarter of next year. The first batch of products will mainly be 55 inches and 65 inches, and will be positioned in the ultra-high-end market. LG Electronics has also been working with QD Vision to develop quantum dot backlight technology. In addition, Sony also plans to launch QD LCD TV products larger than 55 inches. Driven by the active promotion of international panel manufacturers, quantum dot display technology will continue to heat up in the next five years.

In the global TV manufacturing market, as TV display technology matures, the technical differences between manufacturers are shrinking. After LED, 3D, 4K, and OLED, the application of quantum dot technology has found a new driving force for TV display technology. The launch of the quantum dot TV H9700 manufactured by TCL marks that my country's color TV industry has become a leader in the application of international quantum dot technology.
