Microsoft is confident that Windows 10 can reverse the decline

But even so, Microsoft still has full confidence in the Windows Phone system. Microsoft believes that all problems will be solved with the launch of the new Windows 10 operating system. Whether it is an Xbox game console, tablet computer, PC or smartphone, as long as it is a Microsoft product, it can run the Windows 10 operating system.

In addition, Windows 10 also allows app developers to write cross-device applications that can run on any device, regardless of the size of the device screen. In theory, the quality of apps in Microsoft's mobile device app store will be improved as a result.

"In today's world, people don't think about offline types of products anymore, they think about what they want to do," Craig Sullivan, senior director of marketing for Microsoft's devices division, told Business Insider at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. "Users don't want these sophisticated types of products, they want a continuous family of devices."

In other words, in Microsoft's view, users now don't care what devices they are using. Instead, users just want to use these devices to send emails, share files, check Facebook, etc. In this case, companies that can seamlessly integrate all these experiences across devices will become the winners in the market.

Sullivan pointed out that there are more than 1.5 billion Windows users worldwide, and later this year, most of them will be able to upgrade their systems to Windows 10 for free. Microsoft believes that by then, application developers will flock to the Windows 10 platform and quickly occupy most of the market. Ultimately, developers will love Windows 10 and Windows 10 phones will also benefit from this.

Sullivan said Microsoft also plans to launch a high-end flagship phone when Windows 10 is released.

Regardless, the stakes are high for Microsoft. Tablet and PC apps work very differently than pure mobile apps, and the chances of getting the developers behind Snapchat, Instagram, or some other new hit app to build for it simply because it's running on more than a billion PCs worldwide are slim.

However, nothing is certain yet, and Microsoft will disclose detailed information at the Build developer conference in April.
