Survey Report on Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030

“AI and Life in 2030” examines eight areas of urban life that are already being greatly impacted by AI and will be even more so in 2030: transportation, home/service robots, healthcare, education, entertainment, poor communities, public safety and security, and employment and the workplace.

The most challenging issues over the next 15 years will be how to develop safe and reliable hardware for self-driving cars and medical robots, how to gain public trust in artificial intelligence systems, especially for the poor, and allay concerns that technology will take away human jobs.

Legal and liability issues also come up in these discussions: How do self-driving cars make decisions in dilemma situations? Who is responsible if a self-driving car crashes or a smart medical device malfunctions? How can we prevent artificial intelligence from being used for racial discrimination or financial fraud?

The report does not offer solutions, but rather aims to spark conversations among scientists, ethicists, policymakers, industry leaders and the public.

Grosz said she hopes the AI 100 report "sparks a century-long discussion about how AI technologies can shape and improve the way we live in the future."
