Predict, sense, respond: the Internet of Things for government

"Predict, Sense, Respond: Government Internet of Things" is a research report on the strategic application of government Internet of Things published by Deloitte University Press. Like enterprises, government agencies are striving to provide better government services to society in the increasingly complex social environment. The public sector is also focusing on the application and promotion of Internet of Things technology in public services, aiming to improve service capabilities, streamline various procedures, make cities smarter, and create new value for the public.

Key Views/Main Results <br /> This report outlines how new IoT capabilities create value, explains the impact of IoT on three traditional public sectors (education, public safety, and utilities), and explores the factors that government agencies need to consider when adopting IoT technology. It aims to help government agencies further recognize and understand the emerging technology of IoT.

Benefits to the people. Today, our society is happy to exchange data for valuable services. For example, from social media to personal fitness tracking, as long as users feel that the service has provided them with value, they will allow software companies to continue to access their data. This reciprocal relationship also applies to government services.
Security first. Public sector organizations are well-positioned to help develop a secure IoT given their inherent responsibility to protect the public interest. Unlike private companies, which must balance profit incentives, government’s core mission must be aligned with public safety.
Be open and transparent to build trust. Compared with commercial organizations, government agencies have more responsibilities to users and should be open and transparent - for example, they should clearly state what data is needed, how the data obtained will be used, and who will see the data.
