From robot baristas to self-driving cars, robo-advisors and facial recognition, AI is redefining how we think about government, school, work and everyday life. Startups that aren’t leveraging AI are starting to fall behind. In a venture capital market filled with mega-round investments, AI startups are undoubtedly well-funded. SenseTime is the best-funded AI startup to date, with a total of $1.6 billion in investment, and recently received $620 million in Series C+ funding led by Tiger Global Management and Fidelity International. After this round of investment, SenseTime's valuation will exceed $4.5 billion, making it the most valuable AI company in history. As more and more corporate venture capital arms and other risk investors look to cash in on the hype around AI, we used Crunchbase data to uncover the most funded startups in the AI industry. The chart below shows AI startups that have received at least one venture round since January 1, 2016, ranked by total funding. It is worth noting that 40% of the top 30 AI startups with the most funding since 2016 are located in China. This is partly due to the Chinese government’s goal of becoming a leading country in the development of AI technology, and AI startups enjoy a better development environment. |
