For most people, "smart" is not a very clear concept, but this does not seem to prevent various products named "smart" from springing up like mushrooms after rain and entering all aspects of life. The tools we commonly use for office, study, dining, travel and various other purposes are all on the road of "smart" or "being smart". So, compared to the prototypes before the "upgrade", where exactly is the "intelligence" of these "new products" reflected? On the surface, these "smart" products have one or more functions that ordinary products do not have, such as social interaction, entertainment, and monitoring. However, from the technical means of realizing these functions, there is not much new or profound. After comparison, we can find that the technical "intelligence" of these products can usually be reflected in the following aspects: 1. Independent system Smartphones can be regarded as the pioneers of smart products, and having an independent system is the most basic and critical step in the process of smart phones. This upgrade model is also reflected in the subsequent smart watches, TVs and future smart cars. 2. Internet access Compared with traditional products, there are a number of smart products on the market that use "internet connectivity" as their biggest technical highlight. The "network" mentioned here usually includes the Internet and telecommunications networks, corresponding to Wi-Fi and 3G/4G technologies. These technologies have reached a relatively mature level, and manufacturers can achieve the purpose of networking by introducing the required chips. Wireless network connection can be achieved through Wi-Fi chips. Smart phones, tablets, smart photo frames, etc. are typical applications of this technology. The penetration rate of public Wi-Fi environments in China is not high, so this technology alone cannot well meet the real-time network connection needs of some products. The second solution can largely reduce the product's dependence on the network environment, that is, using a SIM card to access the telecommunications network. The 4G function of tablets and some children's anti-lost positioning watches are achieved in this way. 3. Non-button control method Traditional electronic products usually use physical buttons to achieve control functions. Traditional electronic watches, feature phones, air conditioner remote controls, etc. But this method is rarely seen in smart products. So, how do these products achieve control? The most common method is mobile phone APP control. The communication between the mobile phone and the product is achieved through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. This is equivalent to forming a one-to-one or one-to-many "local area network" between the mobile phone and the product, and transmitting pre-set commands through specific signals to achieve control functions. The legendary "Gree Universal Remote Control" is trying to use this model. There are also some control methods that sound very "intelligent", such as gesture recognition, touch screen, voice, somatosensory control, etc. In fact, most smart product manufacturers that use these methods do not have the R&D capabilities of these technologies, but directly borrow third-party accessories, chips or SDKs. From the market point of view, the smart products that currently use these control methods should be smart speakers. This may be related to its positioning as the entrance to the future smart home. It is worth mentioning that Apple recently announced that it has officially joined the NFC Forum to participate in the development of future NFC standards. Previously, the iBeacon technology promoted by Apple has been well applied in the field of indoor positioning. This time, Apple's support may further promote the application of NFC mobile payment functions worldwide. In China, a certain brand of wristband that focuses on payment uses this technology. Compared with remote payment, the NFC payment process does not require an Internet connection and is more secure. The upgrade of control methods is actually the expansion of control signals, relying on the development of communication technology. 4. Realize data collection Industry insiders have said that smart hardware is a product manifestation of several major Internet technology trends. Big data is a major trend behind it. Therefore, data collection is also a major "smart" manifestation of hardware products that serve as data entry points. This feature is particularly evident in products focusing on medical and health, such as smart bracelets, sleep monitors, children/female temperature monitors, smart underwear, etc. The reduction in the size and improvement in the accuracy of various sensors are the basis for the realization of such products. 5. Functional Overlay In addition, some products achieve "intelligence" by adding "extra functions", such as routers with storage functions, storage devices with mobile power functions, headphones with sports bracelet functions, speakers with video functions, etc. The above features are mainly for smart products that have evolved from traditional products. Merchants usually add the word "smart" before the original name of the product to distinguish it, such as "smart light bulb", "smart water cup", "smart backpack", etc. However, intelligence itself does not have clear feature restrictions, so consumers cannot understand from the name which aspect of the product has been upgraded to "smart". I don’t know whether the merchants want to use the gimmick of “intelligence” or deliberately confuse the concept of “intelligence”. When the word “intelligence” is rampant, this naming method that seems high-sounding but cannot reflect the actual characteristics of the product may no longer be wise.
