Qualcomm: What is the future of 5G?

Qualcomm has released a report titled “What is the Future of 5G?” Work has already begun to further strengthen the technical foundation of 5G NR Release 15, which will not only bring better mobile broadband efficiency and experience, but will also expand the overall coverage of 5G to new devices, services, and industries.

Basic enhancements for future mobile broadband and more

While Release 15 has laid a solid technical foundation for 5G NR in sub-7 GHz and mmWave, we are continuing to work on multiple fronts to further improve its performance and efficiency, including better coverage, capacity, latency, mobility, power, etc. These enhancements will benefit not only core mobile broadband services and smartphone connectivity, but also more use cases that 5G NR will bring in Release 16 and beyond.

Ultra-reliability and low latency for high-performance Industrial IoT (IIoT)

One of the key goals of 5G is to expand cellular into new vertical markets and use cases, and 5G IIoT is one of the areas that has generated a lot of interest in both the mobile and industrial ecosystems. In fact, 5G has the opportunity to become the connectivity solution for "Industry 4.0", providing a scalable solution that can efficiently address a wide range of IIoT devices and services.

Leveraging C-V2X for smarter transportation.

The future vision of smarter transportation builds on various R&D focused on making our roads safer, our cars more autonomous, and our in-car experiences more enjoyable. It enables cars to communicate with other cars (V2V), road infrastructure (V2I), pedestrians (V2P), and networks (V2N) even in non-operating (NLOS) situations.

Other expansion areas: massive IoT, broadcasting, XR, etc.

To realize the 5G vision of connecting nearly everything around us, we also need to extend 5G to the other extreme of massive IoT, connecting devices that require greater coverage and longer battery life.
