AIIA: 2021 White Paper on Artificial Intelligence Applications in the Telecommunications Industry

In order to accelerate the application and integrated development of artificial intelligence technology in the telecommunications industry, under the guidance of the AIIA Industry-University-Research Integration and Application Working Group, the Telecommunications Project Group organized the Standards and Technology Research Institute of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the Research Institute of China Mobile Communications Co., Ltd., the Research Institute of China Telecom Co., Ltd., the Research Institute of China Unicom Co., Ltd., Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., ZTE Corporation, Intel (China) Co., Ltd. and other units to jointly compile the "White Paper on Artificial Intelligence Applications in the Telecommunications Industry" 2021 Edition.

As the infrastructure of information and communication, telecommunication networks have great space and potential for applying artificial intelligence technology. Domestic and foreign operators, equipment manufacturers, and service providers have made arrangements for the intelligentization of telecommunication networks, and the intelligentization of telecommunication networks has made important progress in standard research, technical verification, and implementation. With the large-scale commercial use of 5G networks and the maturity of the construction of network artificial intelligence platforms, more and more network intelligent applications and services have been implemented and have achieved good results.

This white paper systematically analyzes the overall development trend and application status of the current intelligent telecommunications network, and focuses on 19 typical implementation cases of AI technology in three application scenarios: mobile communication networks, fixed communication networks, and network business services, including root cause analysis, abnormal cell discovery, base station energy saving, intelligent recommendation of business content, intelligent monitoring of network quality, and intelligent identification and optimization of services. As the application of artificial intelligence in the telecommunications industry accelerates its deployment and release of value in existing networks, the basic capabilities of network intelligence will continue to increase, network knowledge and artificial intelligence technology will be integrated to adapt to the needs of network intelligent applications, and new technology paradigms such as federated learning and transfer learning will receive more applications and attention. Artificial intelligence technology will run through the operation and evolution of the end-to-end life cycle of telecommunications networks, realize the ubiquitous intelligent capabilities of the network, help operators achieve digital transformation, and drive the intelligent upgrade of the entire telecommunications industry.
