The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers reported passenger car sales (shipments) of 226,353 units in October, down 27% year-on-year. This was the second consecutive month lower than last year’s performance due to factors such as semiconductor shortages. By manufacturer, the largest manufacturer Maruti Suzuki fell 33% to 108,991 units. South Korea's Hyundai Motor fell 35% to 37,021 units, and its subsidiary Kia also fell 22% to 16,331 units. Local major Mahindra & Mahindra increased to 20,130 units, an increase from the same month last year, but only 1%. Monthly statistics compiled by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers do not include Tata Motors and Commercial Vehicles, which are also major local players. India celebrates the Hindu New Year, Diwali, in early November, and the festive season is a time of increased sales each year. "Manufacturers were looking forward to the festive season to revive sales, but semiconductor shortages and soaring raw material costs are major hurdles for the industry," SIAM executive secretary Rajesh Menon said in a statement. Maruti Suzuki announced that November production would be "around 85% of normal output." From: Jiwei.com |
