HTC: It will take three to five years for virtual reality to become mainstream

At the TechCrunch Summit in Beijing on Monday, HTC Chief Content Officer Phil Chen expressed his views on virtual reality after Oculus co-founder Dillon Seo's speech: "Virtual reality will flourish next year, but it will take at least three to five years for this technology to truly become mainstream."

"It will take some time before it officially enters the consumer market." Chen said that the current virtual reality devices still need to be refined and VR content needs to be enriched. Although HTC is full of confidence in the technology at this time, Chen said that he expects VR device sales to exceed 1 billion units in seven or eight years.

HTC has teamed up with well-known game developer Valve to jointly develop and promote HTC Vive. The upcoming VR device will be somewhat similar to Oculus Rift, which belongs to Facebook. Vive is currently scheduled to be released early next year and is expected to be shipped in limited quantities before the end of this year.
