Tesla's free charging service will end next year and will be replaced by a points-based system

 

Lifetime free charging is a major selling point of Tesla cars. As long as you buy a car, you can use more than 4,600 Superchargers around the world for free. But if you are planning to buy a car recently, you'd better hurry up. Tesla recently announced that after January 1 next year, newly sold Model S and Model X will no longer enjoy free charging services.

Tesla said in a statement that the changes to the Supercharger network will not affect existing owners, as well as consumers who purchased the car before January 2, 2017, as long as the car is delivered before April 1, 2017. In addition, although Model 3s will not be put into production until next summer, they are also not affected by the new policy. Of course, Model 3 does not enjoy free charging services, which has been confirmed by Tesla President Elon Musk.

As for new users who buy a car after January 1, they will receive 400kWh of free charging credits per year, which is equivalent to 1,000 miles of driving range. As for the specific charges after exceeding this limit, Tesla did not give a specific price, only saying that the fee will be very low.

Tesla also mentioned that the Supercharger network will not be a profitable project, and this change will allow them to reinvest in the network and accelerate its development, while bringing the best charging experience to existing and future users.
