Intel to invest $250 million in developing driverless cars

Foreign media reports:

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich delivered a keynote speech in which he said Intel will invest a total of $250 million in the next two years in the development of driverless cars. This is indeed a considerable investment, and it is also a clear signal that the computer chip industry giant will play a vital role in the field of driverless cars in the future.

However, this does not mean that Intel will develop its own driverless cars and fleet. After all, it is a very complicated process to build a car from scratch, and it requires huge investment from design, research and development, production to assembly. Intel seems to be investing more energy in the technology of driverless cars, and has no interest in producing cars.

Intel said in a statement: "This investment will drive the advancement of connectivity, communication, environmental awareness, deep learning, safety and other features in the next generation of automobiles." In other words, Intel is actually planning to help traditional automakers like BMW to jointly develop driverless technology and is mainly responsible for data processing. Previously, BMW has also stated that Intel and Israel's Mobileye have established a cooperative alliance to build Intel's computer processing chips and Mobileye's driving assistance systems into their products, and will gradually increase the amount of equipment in the future, and launch truly autonomous vehicles by 2021.

"Fully independent driving" is the keyword of Intel's speech at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Although many automotive products are already equipped with a variety of autonomous driving and assisted driving technologies, including automated dynamic cruise control, lane assist and even super cruise functions like Tesla and GM, fully independent driving products like Google Car are definitely a more advanced technology. This driverless technology can automatically adapt to complex traffic conditions and has higher driving capabilities than human drivers. All the passengers have to do is rest in the car, and the driverless car will automatically transport the passengers to their destination.

In fact, as a chip giant, Intel does not have as much leadership in software and system services as it does in the hardware field. However, in recent years, Intel has been accelerating its pace of catching up in many fields, including artificial intelligence, learning machines, and Internet of Things services.

In fact, Intel is not the only technology company that has invested a lot of money and manpower in driverless cars. Almost all large technology companies have begun to cooperate with car manufacturers to invest in the research and development of driverless cars. Graphics card manufacturer NVIDIA and Chinese Internet giant Baidu have begun to develop their own driverless technology. The Obama administration has also stated that the US federal government will invest a total of US$4 billion in the next 10 years to provide various research and development and testing conditions for the driverless car industry, hoping to promote the development of vehicle networking and autonomous driving technology.
