Volkswagen plans to cut 30,000 jobs and save $3.9 billion in expenses

Volkswagen announced on Friday that it will cut up to 30,000 jobs worldwide and save $3.9 billion in expenses as the company strives to make up for the impact of the diesel emissions cheating scandal and shift its focus to electric vehicles, according to the New York Times.

The layoff plan includes 23,000 layoffs in Germany. Through layoffs and other effective measures, Volkswagen plans to increase the productivity of its German factories by 25% in the coming years.
But the measure may not be enough to narrow the gap that has long been widened by Toyota and other competitors. After all, Volkswagen has agreed to avoid compulsory layoffs until 2025. At the same time as the layoffs, Volkswagen will also add about 9,000 new jobs related to electric vehicle production and other technologies.
The company has been forced to pay more than 18 billion euros in litigation settlements and compensation to consumers since it admitted last year to rigging nearly 11 million diesel cars to cheat on emissions tests.
