US court postpones Volkswagen 3.0L diesel trial

According to foreign media reports, US District Judge Charles Breyer announced that the Volkswagen Group diesel vehicle trial will be postponed. The trial will mainly discuss the solution for 80,000 Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen 3.0L diesel vehicles.

In the court order, Breyer said Volkswagen Group, regulators and lawyers representing car owners were still in talks, and relevant parties suggested that he postpone the trial because it "may promote a solution."

Reuters reported on November 15 that Volkswagen has reached a repurchase and repair agreement with US regulators for 80,000 problematic vehicles, but other matters such as compensation for car owners still need to be discussed.

The agreement includes the buyback of 20,000 older Audi cars and Volkswagen SUVs and the repair of software for 60,000 owners of newer Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen vehicles.

In June, Volkswagen agreed to spend more than $10 billion to resolve the emissions scandal, offering to buy back 475,000 2.0L diesel vehicles and give each owner compensation ranging from $5,100 to $10,000. Volkswagen has started buying back the relevant vehicles since last week.

People familiar with the matter said that the talks between Volkswagen and the car owners' lawyers have made some progress but no agreement has been reached. The 2.0L Volkswagen diesel car has 40 times the legal emission, and the 3.0L car is equipped with an auxiliary emission system, which has 9 times the standard emission.

Regarding the 3.0L vehicle solution, Volkswagen plans to add funds to offset excessive emissions. In June, Volkswagen agreed to pay $2.7 billion to compensate for the pollution caused by 2.0L diesel vehicles in the past three years. The number of 3.0L vehicles is small and the pollution level is relatively low, so the additional funds should be much less than that of 2.0L diesel vehicles.

So far, Volkswagen has agreed to pay $16.5 billion in compensation for the U.S. emissions cheating scandal, and Volkswagen may also face billions of dollars in fines from the U.S. Department of Justice.
